Relative Clause: Defining
Relative Clause
Relative clauses give us information about the person or thing
mentioned.
Defining relative clauses give us essential information – information
that tells us who or what we are talking about. A defining relative
clause usually comes immediately after the noun it describes.
E.g. The woman who lives next door works in a bank. (defining relative
clause)
E.g.: These are the birds which migrate in autumn. (defining relative
clause)
3
Relative Clause: who; which
and that
We usually use a relative pronoun to start a defining relative clause.
We use who; which; whose and that as relative pronouns.
We use who for people and which for things.
The pronouns who and which are often replaced by that in spoken English.
E.g.: They’re the people who want to buy our house. (who is a relative pronoun)
Or: They’re the people that want to buy our house. ( we can use that instead of who in
spoken English)
E.g.: An elephant is an animal which lives in hot countries. (which is arelative pronoun)
