CHAPTER 6

Data Science and

Data Visualization
CPE 22 | EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN CPE
CHAPTER 6

Learning Objectives
At the end of the chapter the student should be able to:
• Define and Explain the significance of Data Science and Data
Visualization
• Provide applications of Data Science and demonstrate how it
works
• Provide applications of Data Visualizations and demonstrate
how it works
• Identify the future of Data Science and Data Visualization
CHAPTER 6

Data Visualization
• Data Visualization is the practice of
representing data in graphical or visual
formats (e.g., charts, graphs, dashboards).
• Its goal is to make complex data easier to
understand, analyze, and communicate
• Design, storytelling, and the right use of
visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI,
matplotlib).
CHAPTER 6

How Data Science and

Data Visualization
Works
• Data Collection – Gathering data from sensors,
transactions, social media, or databases.
• Data Cleaning & Preparation – Removing duplicates,
handling missing values, and structuring the data.
• Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) – Using statistics and
visualization to find patterns.
• Modeling & Machine Learning – Applying algorithms
(regression, classification, clustering) to predict or
classify.
• Interpretation & Deployment – Turning results into
actionable insights and applying them in real-world
systems.

CHAPTER 6

How Data Visualization

Works
• Data Input – Load raw data (numbers, logs,
transactions).
• Processing & Aggregation – Summarize and group data
meaningfully.
• Graphical Mapping – Convert data into visuals (charts,
heat maps, dashboards).
• Interpretation – Users quickly spot trends, outliers, and
insights.
CHAPTER 6

Examples of Data
Science
• Examples of Data Science
• Spam email classification (Gmail’s spam filter).
• Netflix recommendation system (suggests
movies/shows).
• Predicting customer churn in telecom.
• Fraud detection in banking.
CHAPTER 6

Examples of Data
Visualization
• Pie chart showing student performance distribution.
• Line graph showing COVID-19 daily cases.
• Heat maps showing weather patterns.
• Dashboards in business intelligence tools (sales trends,
KPIs).
CHAPTER 6

Data Science
Applications
• Healthcare - Predicting disease outbreaks, medical
image analysis.
• Retail - Personalized marketing, customer behavior
analysis.
• Finance - Risk management, credit scoring, fraud
detection.
• Transportation - Predicting traffic, optimizing delivery
routes.
• Agriculture - Crop yield prediction, smart farming.
CHAPTER 6

Data Visualization
Applications
• Government - Population census charts for policy-
making.
• Education - Student progress dashboards for teachers.
• Business - Sales performance dashboards for
managers.
• Science - Climate change graphs showing rising
temperatures.
• Sports - Performance analysis of athletes.
CHAPTER 6

The Future of Data Science and

Data Visualization in the Industry
• Artificial Intelligence Integration - Data Science will be
increasingly powered by AI and automation.
• Real-Time Visualization - Instant dashboards for
decision-making (e.g., stock trading, IoT monitoring).
• Augmented & Virtual Reality (AR/VR) - Future
visualizations may be 3D and immersive.
• Democratization of Data - Easier access to data tools,
even for non-technical users.
• Ethics & Privacy - Future trends will focus on
responsible and ethical data usage.
