Quarter 2- Module 2

Direct, Inverse and Partitive Proportion

differentiate direct, inverse and partitive proportion from
one another;
 determine the missing term in a proportion; and

 solve problems involving direct proportion, partitive

proportion, and inverse proportion in different contexts
such as distance, rate and time using appropriate
strategies and tools.
Express the following ratios in fraction
using its simplest form.
𝟏𝟎
𝟑 a. 20 boys to 6 girls
𝟒
𝟓 b. 8 hours to 10 hours
𝟏
𝟏𝟐 c. 3 dozens to 36 dozens
𝟓
𝟔 d. 25 atis to 30 mangoes
𝟐
𝟑 e. 12 chairs to 18 tables
Direct Proportion
- States that as one term
increases, the other term also
increases.
Example 1:
A car is able to travel 210
kilometers in 3 hours. How far
can it travel in 5 hours?
Step 1: Draw a table
Number of kilometers 210 x
Number of hours 3 5

Step 2: Set up the proportion

=
Step 3: Solve for the missing term using cross
multiplication
3x = 210 x 5
=
=
x = 350
The car is able to travel 350 km in 5 hours.
Example 2:
Find the cost of 10 kg of
biscuits if 6 kg of biscuits cost
Php. 900.
1. What is asked?
Cost of 10 kg of biscuit
2. What are given?
10 kg, 6 kg, Php. 900
3. What operation/s must be used?
Multiplication and Division
4. Solve
Step 1: Draw a table
Cost of Biscuits x 900
Weight of Biscuits (in kg) 10 6

Step 2: Set up the proportion

=
Step 3: Solve for the missing term using cross
multiplication
6x = 10 x 900
=
=
x = 1500
The cost of 10 kg of biscuits is Php. 1 500
Solve for the problem below:
A car goes 24 km on 3 liters of gasoline.
How far can it go on 15 liters?
1. What is asked?
2. What are given?
3. What operation/s must be used?
4. Solution
5. Answer
Inverse Proportion

 Describes that as one term

increases, the other term
decreases or vice versa.
Inverse Proportion
Example 1:
A family of 4 has enough
food to last for 12 days. How
long for a family of 8 will the
same amount of food last?
Step 1: Draw a table
Members in the Family 4 8
Number of Days 12 x
Step 2: Set up the proportion in an inverse proportion, the
1st term corresponds to the 3rd and the 4th corresponds
to the 2nd term.)
Old number of members of family

New number of members of family

= New number of days

Old number of days

Step 3: Solve for the missing term using cross
multiplication
8x = 4 x 12
=
=
x=6
The food will last for 6 days.
Inverse Proportion
Example 2:
If 10 men can build a house
in 60 days, how long will it
take 6 men to finish the same
job?
Step 3: Solve for the missing term using cross
multiplication
6x = 10 x 60
=
=
x = 100
The job will be finished in 100 days.
Partitive Proportion

 Is used when a given whole

is to be divided into several
parts given a specified ratio
Partitive Proportion
Example 1:
A jar has 60 pieces of
chocolate cookies. Rian, Tin and
Belle will share the cookies in the
ratio of 3:2:1. How many cookies
will each of them get?
Let n be the number of
cookies. Following the ratio
3:2:1
Rian = 3n
Tin =2n
Belle = n
3n + 2n + n = 60
6n = 60
=
n = 10
Rian gets = 3 x n Belle gets
= 3 x 10 =1xn
Rian gets = 30 = 1 x 10
Tin gets = 2 x n Belle gets 10
= 2 x 10
Tin gets = 20
Solve for the following problems:
DIRECT PROPORTION
1. If a pack of pastillas costs ₱
125.00, how much would you pay for
5 packs of pastillas?
It costs Php. 625
Solve for the following problems:
INVERSE PROPORTION
2. Five trucks can transfer 150 tons of
vegetable a day. How many days
does it take for 7 trucks to transfer
630 tons of vegetables?
It will take 3 days
Solve for the following problems:
PARTITIVE PROPORTION
3. A bucket has 64 chocolates,
Adrian, Rico and Dave will share the
chocolates in the ratio 1:1:2. How
many chocolates will each one of
them get? Adrian = 16, Rico = 16, Dave= 32
