LEARNING
OBJECTIVES
• Explain what
development means
and how it makes life
better.
• Use simple measures
like income and health
to compare how
developed countries are
Keywords: Development, income,
GDP per capita, life expectancy,
quality of life.
Resources:

process of
improving the

DEVELOPMENT
INDICATOR
Development indicator is a method used to measure how
developed a country compared to others.
Human Development
Index (HDI) (Infant
mortality rate,
Literacy
rate, Life
expectancy).
Gross
Birth and
Domestic
death rates
Product(GDP)
GROSS DOMESTIC
PRODUCT(GDP)
The total value of goods and services produced within a
country in a given year. It is often used to measure
economic strength and living standards.
BIRTH AND DEATH
RATES
Birth and Death Rates – The number of births and deaths per
1,000 people in a year. High birth rates may indicate a
developing country, while low birth and death rates are
often seen in developed nations.
HUMAN
DEVELOPMENT
INDEX (HDI
• Infant Mortality Rate – The number of infants who die
before their first birthday per 1,000 live births.
• Literacy Rate – The percentage of people who can read
and write, reflecting the education level in a country.
• Life Expectancy – The average number of years a person
is expected to live, indicating healthcare quality and
overall living conditions.
DEVELOPEMENT
• More Economically
• Developed
• Countries(MEDCs) : UK,
USA,
• Australia, Japan, etc.
• Less Economically
Developed
• Countries( LEDCs) : Nigeria,
• Egypt, Sudan, Kenya,
Cambodia etc.
TASK
• Questions:
• Based on the data, which country appears to be the most developed?
• Which country is the least developed?
• What patterns do you notice between GDP per capita and life expectancy?
• Why do you think higher GDP per capita is often linked to longer life expectancy?
• Are there any exceptions in the table where GDP does not match the expected life
expectancy?
