PROBLEM 1
Water-dioxane solution forming a minimum boiling azeotrope cannot be separated by ordinary distillation
techniques. Benzene forming no azeotrope with dioxane can be used as an extraction solvent. The
equilibrium distribution of dioxane between water and benzene at 298 K is as follows:
Wt % dioxane in water 5.1 18.9 25.2
5.2 22.5 32
At these concentrations, benzene and water are essentially insoluble
(i) 1000 kg of a 25% dioxane and 75% water solution is to be extracted with benzene to remove
95% of the dioxane. The benzene is dioxane free. Calculate the solvent requirement for a single
stage batch operation
(ii) If the extraction is done in countercurrent fashion with 1000kg/h of feed solution containing 25%
of dioxane, what is the minimum solvent requirement in kg/h to remove 95% of the dioxane.
Fresh benzene is used.

• Convert the data to kg dioxane/kg water and
kg dioxane/kg benzene
• Wt fraction of dioxane in
water=5.1/100=0.051
• X=0.051/(1-0.051)=0.05374
• Get y1 corresponding to x1
