Ethical Egoism
•Individual ethical egoism: Each person should act in ways
that serve their interests.
•Personal ethical egoism: "I should act in my self-interest,
but I don’t make claims about what others should do."
•Universal ethical egoism: Everyone should act in their self-
interest.
Utilitarianism
• An action is morally right if it produces the greatest good
(happiness, pleasure, or well-being) for the greatest number of
people.
Altruism
• Altruism means acting for the benefit of others, even at a cost
to yourself.
• In simple words: It is a selfless concern for others’ well-being.
• An altruistic person helps others not for reward, but because it is
the right thing to do
• Key Points:
• Opposite of egoism (which focuses on self-interest).
• Motivated by kindness, compassion, and empathy.
• Can be small acts (helping a classmate, donating) or big sacrifices
(risking your life to save someone).
