» Although part of modern life, caffeine can have possible
adverse effects
– Irritability, caffeine sensitivity, anxiety, irregular heartbeat
» Caffeine content might be hard to find
– Does your drink of choice list the milligrams?

• What is caffeine?
» Caffeine is defined as a stimulant - it stimulates the central
nervous system, causing alertness
• Sources of caffeine
» Naturally occurs in some leaves, beans
– We most commonly consume in coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks,
and supplements
» Can also be produced synthetically
• How it works
» Caffeine prevents drowsiness by preventing adenosine
activation
» Absorbed in ~30-45 minutes, remains for 4-6hrs in 3

» Amount of caffeine needed to produce an effect in
someone
– Most affected by amount of caffeine someone has daily
» Individual tolerance
– Height, weight

– High tolerance
» Need larger amounts over time
– Withdrawal

Caffeine guidelines

• Stay under 400mg daily, maybe even under


200mg
» For teens, children, definitely stay under 50-100mg
daily
» Women who are pregnant should generally avoid
• Avoid caffeine after 2pm
» Or, 7hrs before you intend to go to bed
• Stay hydrated in parallel
» The “best” energy drink is water
• If you choose to cut back, do so gradually 9
