CONCEPTUALIZATION
What is
assessment
• Teachers assess to determine understanding.
• Teachers assess to determine if the objectives have been
achieved/the targeted competencies have been
developed.
• You can also use assessment to develop competencies.
e.g self-discovery, investigation, etc.
N.B Assessment should contribute to the development of
higher-order competencies.
CONCEPTUALIZATION
• In LU 1 types of assessment have been discussed
already
(baseline, formal, informal, formative, summative, etc).
You have to know them, & know when to use then.
• In LU 1 there is also a table with assessment techniques.
Again it is important to know when to use each.
• In the same unit, your attention is brought to the
assessment tools discussed in the your textbook.
CONCEPTUALIZATION
(study guide)
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
It’s about redress, saving resources, increasing the number
of qualified individuals, promoting life-long learning…
• Who gets recognized? Examples…
• By who?....
• How?......
CONCEPTUALIZATION
FEEDBACK
• What is feedback?
• Why is feedback important?
promotes self-reflection;
promotes understanding between the teacher & the
learner;
provides the opportunity to improve performance;
it is motivational;
it is a reflection process for the teacher also.
FEEDBACK
N.B Remember the learners can also give each other
feedback.
• Good practices (Study guide)
• Bad practices (study guide)
FAIRNESS
• One of the principles of assessment is fairness.
N.B Assessment is not competition between the teacher
and the learner.
Avoid statements like, “You think you know it all, I told you
that you will fail”.
Such statements are not only unprofessional, but they are
demoralizing. This is how we lose respect of the learners.
• Some associate fairness with validity, authenticity, and
reliable.
FAIR ASSESSMENT
• Using the curriculum to inform learners of assessment
criteria. (textbook)
• Clear and understandable instructions.
• Integrating conditions and requirements in the
instructions.
• Transparency.
