PLANTING

METHODS

AG-CC2112
METHODS OF PLANTING
 Direct seeding- seeds
are directly planted/sown
in the field
Ex. Corn, peanut,
mungbean, soybean

 Transplanting- seedling
are used as planting
materials
Ex. Rice, asexually
propagated plants, most
vegetables
TYPES OF DIRECT SEEDING

 Broadcast- seeds are scattered uniformly in

the field without a definite distance. Requires
good land preparation. Done in small seeded
crops such as rice, tobacco, mustard, etc.
TYPES OF DIRECT SEEDING

 Drilling- seeds are sown in specified distance

such as corn, mungbean, cowpea, sugarcane,
etc.
TYPES OF DIRECT SEEDING

 Dibble- seeds are sown in more or less

uniform distance. No land preparation
needed before planting. Only the area where
the hole will be made is the cultivated done
in hill areas
REASONS FOR
TRANSPLANTING

 Seeds that are difficult to germinate

 Seeds that are expensive

 Small seeds

 Asexually propagated
PLANT/ POPULATION DENSITY

Refers to the number of plants

per unit area
Each crops species/ variety/
cultivar has different optimum
planting density
BENEFITS OF OPTIMUM
PLANTING DENSITY

 Early build of sufficient leaf area index

(LAI) for optimum utilization of solar
energy
 Early and better weed control of weeds

 Increase efficiency in the use of land

and water
FACTOR TO CONSIDER IN DETERMINING
THE OPTIMUM PLANTING DENSITY

 Crop species /variety/ cultivar

 Morphology, growth habit, extent of the root

system
 Soil fertility and management practices

 Method of propagation

 Degree of mechanization

 Cropping system

For annual crops, planting is done either by

rows or broadcaster and for perennial crops,
planting design are used
PLANTING DESIGN/ PATTERN
PLANTING DESIGN/ PATTERN
 Square system- plants are placed at the
corners of the square. Plants are equistant
with one another,
PLANTING DESIGN/ PATTERN
 Triangular system- plants are planted in
the corner of the triangle
PLANTING DESIGN/ PATTERN
 Quincunx system- a modification of the
square system wherein an addition plant is
planted at the center of the square.
PLANTING DESIGN/ PATTERN
 Contour system- plants are planted following
the contour line in hilly/sloppy areas. Planting
distance varies between contour lines. But the
same within the contour line. For soil erosion
control
PLANTING DESIGN/ PATTERN
 Double/ multiple rows- plants are planted
along rows. The distance between groups in
rows. Use in some perennial crops such as
pineapple, strawberry, banana etc.
THINGS TO CONSIDER IN
PLANTING
 Depth of planting
 Time of planting

 Application of fertilizer

 For seeding, remove the container carefully

so that the soil will not crumble to prevent

root disturbance.
 Seedling with the long and weak stem

requires added support (stakes) after

planting
 Leaf pruning is done on large seedling to

minimize transpiration
 Watering is done after planting
HIGH DENSITY PLANTING
 Purpose is to minimize the number of plants
per unit area at the early years of fruiting
resulting into high yield per unit area.
 Done in tree crops where in the planting

distance is reduced by 2-10 times compare

to the recommended planting distance
 Requires more planting materials and

intensive management practice

 e.g. pruning, use of growth regulators, etc

 After several years of fruiting , there is a

need to remove some trees to prevent

overcrowding.
