What is a
COMMUNICATION?

• it comes from latin word
"communico" means I share.
• It is defined as a complex
process often involving
reading, writing, speaking, and
listening. (Bouing, 2006)

• refers to relationship exist between and among participants.

personal communication.

• This communication happen between two persons who

• Is a dynamic process where small number of people engage
in a conversation. The group communication is generally
defined as involving three to eight people.

• One person speaks to a group of people; the same with public

• Involves sending a single message to a group which allow
to communicate our message to a large number of people,
but we are limited to tailor our messages to specific
audiences, groups or individuals.

• Formal communication
• It has certain rules, conventions, and principles are
followed while communicating a message. It is usually in
professional settings, corporate meetings, and
conferences undergo in formal pattern.
2. Informal communication
• It is in contrast with formal communication channels. It
is established for societal affiliations of members in an
organization and face-to-face discussions. Use of slang
words and foul languages is not restricted.

Elements of Communication
• Sender is the one who initiates the communication process.
• Encoding is the process of turning thoughts into communication.
• Message is the most important part of the communication
process.
• Channel is the medium or method through which a message is
sent to its intended receiver.
• Receiver is the one who interprets the message of the sender;
makes feedback out of the information taken from the source.
• Decoding is a process of interpretation and translation of coded
information.
• Feedback is the response that is sent back by the receiver to
sender.
Types of Noise
External Noise
• is the sights, sounds, and stimuli that draw
people’s attention to what is being said.
Example: loud sound, dark room, unclear

• refers to thoughts and feelings that intervene in
the communication process. Example:

Functions of Communications
Communication serves signifiant functions in our daily life.

1. We communicate to meet needs. All humans have a


need to communicate; we need other people to
accomplish our need to talk.
2. We communicate to enhance or maintain our sense of
self. We communicate to learn who we are and what we
can do.
3. We communicate to fulfill social obligations. We meet
our social obligation by greeting people.
Functions of Communications
4. We communicate to develop relationships. We develop,
maintain, and deepen our relationships with others through
communication.
5. We communicate to exchange information. Through
reading, writing, observation, and media we are
communicating and exchanging information.
6. We communicate to influence others. When we
encourage, motivate, and persuade, we are influencing
others to be the better version of themselves.
