What is a Computer Network?

• Computer Network - is a group of computers

interconnected with one another.
There are different types of computer network namely;

LAN (Local Area Network) - A type of computer

network within a specific area or vicinity. For example,
computers inside the school connected to one another
is considered as LAN.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) - A type of

computer network within the town or city.

WAN (Wide Area Network) - This type of computer

network is the largest because it it a global
interconnection of computers. An example of this is the
Internet.
So how computer network happens?
All computer devices connected to a network is
called network devices. printers. switch,
MODEM, router etc. are all computer network
devices. To connect computer to another
computer you could use either a cable or signal
as your medium. Network cable is the cheapest
and easiest to manage. Knowledge and skills in
creating a network cable is also pre-requisite in
connecting computers together. Also knowledge
in IP addressing and different network devices is
a good start if you want to learn how to connect
computers together.
What are the Equipment, tools and materials
needed in Connecting two computers using
wired connection?
RJ45
RJ means Registered jack. This is a standard physical Network Interface used for
connecting telecommunications equipment commonly, a computer networking
equipment.
UTP CABLE
The cheapest cable use in computer in networking is the UTP (Unshielded
Twisted Pair) cable. Other use the STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) cable which is
cost much than UTP but more reliable.
CRIMPER
Crimping tool is used to join the RJ-45 and RJ-11 connectors to the both ends of
either phone or CAT5 cable.
WIRE STRIPPER
A tool designed to remove the protective covering (jacket)
off of a cable to expose the inner wires. Because different
wires come in different shapes, there are dozens of
different wire strippers available.
LAN TESTER
A cable tester is a
device that is used to
test the strength and
connectivity of a
particular type of cable
or other wired
assemblies.
COMPUTERS with Network
Interface Card Adapter
Short for Network Interface Card,
the NIC is also referred to as an
Ethernet card and network
adapter. It is an expansion card
that enables a computer to
connect to a network;
Most of the
motherboard nowadays
have already a built-in
LAN Adapter (LAN Port)
Hands-on Activity
Creating of a cross over network cable
Materials Needed:
2 RJ45
1 meter Network Cable – UTP cable

Tools Needed:
Crimping Tool
Wire Stripper
LAN Tester

Equipment Needed:
2 Working computers with Network Adapter (LAN port)

Position all eight wires according to its assigned

pins in the RJ45 .
Position all wires. Make sure that all are in proper
pin assignment.

Cut the wires.
Make sure that the cut is even and small enough
for the RJ45.
Pin 1

Put all wires inside the RJ45.

Make sure all wires reach the pins
Crimp the RJ45 using Crimping tool
Modular RJ-45 Jack I/O Set-up (Terminating Modular Jack I/O)
1. Strip the cable 2 to 3 inches using Wire Stripper.
2. Check the printed color codes inside/outside the modular jack
3. Position the wires based on the printed color codes.
4. Terminate the wires using Impact punch down tool
5. Prepare the Wallplate of the Modular Jack
6. Insert the jack in the Wallplate

7. Test the connection by: a.) Get one (1) straight-through cable, b.) Connect it to the
cable tester and the other end of the straight-through cable connected to the
modular jack, c.) Connect the other end of the modular jack which is RJ-45 to the
other port of the cable tester as shown in the picture below, d.) Begin the test.
Patch Panel Set-up (Terminating Patch Panel)
• Determine the length of the cable base on position or location
• Strip the cable 3 4 inches.
• Un-twist the wires completely
• Check the printed color codes inside the patch panel
5. Sort the wires in its proper position
6. Choose a port on the patch panel before terminating
7. Begin terminating each wire

8. Test the connection ( Note : Test the patch panel like the modular jack above, just
replace the jack with patch panel)
