Key Points
ESSAY STRUCTURE
Essay Introduction
• The introduction usually starts with a
broad overview of the topic, including
a small amount of background
information and a brief explanation of
why this topic is important enough for
us to pay attention to it.
Key Features of an essay Introduction
1. Attention Grabber
• A sentence or two that captures the reader’s interest.
Example: “In today’s world, mobile phones have become an essential part of daily life.”
2. Background Information
• Briefly introduce the topic and give any necessary context.
Example : “Today, mobile phones are used everywhere, even by students during class time.
3. Thesis Statement
• Says clearly what your essay is about or Show the main idea of your essay.
Example: “This essay will explain why mobile phones should not be allowed in the classrooms.
Essay Body
• The body is comprised of many paragraphs, each discussing one
main idea that relates to the overall assignment question. In the
body you usually need to discuss various viewpoints, which
means integrating many different ideas from different sources.
• The body of an essay is the central part where the main ideas
are developed and supported. It's typically made up of 3–5
paragraphs, depending on the length of the essay. Each
paragraph should focus on one main idea and follow a clear
structure.
Example :
Mobile phones help people communicate easily and learn better.
A 2023 survey shows 85% of users stay connected through
phones. Apps like Khan Academy support student learning. But
phones should be used carefully to avoid distractions.
Essay Conclusion
The conclusion restates the topic and gives an overall
summary of the main points raised in the essay. You may
also be required to give recommendations, or briefly state
possible implications of what you have claimed in your
essay. The conclusion never introduces new information and
rarely refers to the research or ideas of others, as this
should already have been covered in the body of the essay.
Example :
mobile phones should be used wisely in schools. While they
are helpful, too much use during class can disturb learning.
Schools must set clear rules to balance learning and
technology.
