Dual Boot
 Can install multiple operating systems onto computer

 Lead reduced hardware costs

 Only One Operating system could be used at a time

Virtualization
 Allows you to create Virtual Machines

 Virtual Machines are software computers

 Virtual Machines run like a traditional software application on your computer

 Virtual Machines provide separate operating system instances

 We can have multiple operating systems running alongside each other

Virtualization

What is Hardware Virtualization ?

 Hardware virtualization is the technology that enables you

to create virtual machines that act like real computers

Increased efficiency and multitasking
Virtualization
The first virtualization system

 The term "Virtualization" was coined in the 1960s in IBM laboratories.

 the IBM M44/44X was the first experimental computer system

capable of simulating multiple Virtual machines.

Types of Virtualization
Types of Virtualization

1. Type 1

2. Type 2
Type Two Virtualization
 Type 2 was the first virtualization system to be developed.
 It is designed to run on an existing operating system.
 The virtual machines running in the virtualization solution connect
to a hypervisor which translate the instructions into operating system
 instructions which are then handled by the operating system.
Type Two Virtualization

 Since the operating system is needed to access the hardware,

 this is slower than if the virtual machines had a direct route to the hardware.
 The advantage of type 2 is they do not require any special hardware in order to run.
Type 2 Virtualization

 Microsoft Virtual PC, Microsoft Virtual Server, VMWare Workstation and VirtualBox.

 The advantage of these are that they can be installed on Windows and do

not require special hardware.

What is Hyper-V

 Hyper-V is a Microsoft Virtualization Product

 Allows you to create Virtual Machines (VMs)
