Lessons Learned from Filmmaking Progression

In our preliminary task for filmmaking, we had limitations that prevented us from fully developing important elements like setting, camera angles, clothing, and music. We only had one room to film in and no costumes, which restricted our ability to establish setting and character. We also had few camera angles and couldn't add effects like lighting. For our full film opening, we improved in these areas and learned more about managing time, using various camera angles to convey meaning, selecting clothing to define characters, and incorporating appropriate music through editing.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from its

full product.

Setting
In our preliminary task, we only had one place to film and this meant that we were unable to create important effects such as lighting and mise-en-scene. This was also effected by the fact that we also had no clothing to change into. This meant that the room we were working in didnt really match what we were wearing because it looked nothing like something you would expect to see in a real scene. What you would have expected is an office at the top of a big building and we only had a dark room to film in.

Time Management
When we filmed our preliminary task we had a time set for us by the teacher and this meant that we always knew when we had to have something and this helped us with our organisation. However, when we had to film for ourselves there were times when we werent completely organised. This meant that when we actually got a deadline for our work some of it we had to put together after school because other people had to use equipment because we took to long to get everything sorted out.

Importance of Camera Angles

In our preliminary task we only had one setting which also limited our scene to only a few camera angles which meant that we couldnt use them effectively as we do now. For example in our opening we have a scene that has Jason looking down on Senna from a balcony. This gave the effect that he was watching him as well as putting him in a position of power. This is something that we would have never been able to do in our preliminary task.

Clothing
This is key to setting the scene and we were unable to do this in our preliminary task because we didnt realise how important it was for setting a scene and developing a characters identity. This was easier for us when we started to film our actual film opening because we chose to have them as agents and they would usually wear suits which is something we wear to school anyway. This meant that we had clothes that conform with the characters persona from the start of filming.

Music
In our preliminary task we didnt really have enough time to put the effort in that we did our film opening and that meant we were able to add music that Jason made. In doing so we learnt how important it was to have synchronised and nondiagetic music to add effect for our film. This also helped us learn the editing program because we had to choose the right time to have the right type of music play in our film.
