Chapter 3: INPUT DEVICES

Scanning & Digitizing Devices

Digitizing Devices

Question:
WhatManual
are digitizing devices? Digital

Digitizing devices convert manually-produced

data into a digital form which can be stored
and manipulated on a computer
The Graphics Tablet
• It is input device…………….digitizing device
• It has a touch-sensitive membrane on a screen
• A stylus/pen/puck can be use to draw on it to draw
with the hand
• The drawing are transferred onto the computer
screen
• PUCK: it is a mouse-like device that can be used to
draw in a graphics tablet
• It is used for making drawings and maps
Scanning devices
• Input devices
• Store data in the form of images (picture) when they
are run across a surface
The Optical (light) Scanner
• It converts data(text,
diagrams, photographs, etc)
into digital form
• Types:
– Flatbed scanner
– Portable scanner (smaller,
lighter)

Two kinds of BC readers
• Handheld BC Reader
• Desktop BC Reader
The Finger Print Reader
• It is part of a biometric system
• It consists of a scanner that scans the individual trait
• And a cord that connects it to a computer of a wireless
connection.
BIOMETRIC SYSTEMS
•Biometric: use to physical/ biological features for
identifying individual human beings.
•Biometric factors: iris, retina, fingerprint, face, voice,
behavioral habits, ETC.
BIOMETRIC SYSTEMS CONSIST OF:
1. A reader or scanning device to record the biometric
factor being authenticated
2. Software to translate the scanned biometric data into
a standardized digital format and to compare match
points of the observed data with saved data
3. A database to securely save biometric data for
comparison
