Computer Generations

Evolution of Computers (1st to 5th

Generation)
Introduction
• Computers को उनकी तकनीकी विकास के
आधार पर विभिन्न पीढ़ियों
(Generations) में बांटा गया है।
• हर Generation नई तकनीक, आकार, गति और
उपयोगिता में सुधार लाती है।
• कुल पाँच मुख्य Generations मानी जाती
हैं।
First Generation (1940–1956)
• Technology: Vacuum Tubes
• Programming Language: Machine Language
• Memory: Magnetic Drums
• Size: बहुत बड़ा और भारी
• Heat generation बहुत अधिक
• Examples: ENIAC, UNIVAC
First Generation: Pros & Cons
• Advantages:
• - Fast calculations (compared to manual
methods)
• - First step in electronic computing
• Disadvantages:
• - बहुत बड़ा आकार
• - बहुत heat produce करते थे
• - Frequent maintenance
Second Generation (1956–1963)
• Technology: Transistors
• Programming Language: Assembly Language
• Memory: Magnetic Core
• Size: Smaller & Faster
• Examples: IBM 1401, IBM 7090
Second Generation: Features
• Transistors replaced vacuum tubes → faster &
reliable
• Lower power consumption
• More commercial use of computers
• Still expensive but practical
Third Generation (1964–1971)
• Technology: Integrated Circuits (ICs)
• Programming Languages: High-level (COBOL,
FORTRAN)
• Features: Reliable, cheap, smaller
• Examples: IBM 360 series, PDP-8
Third Generation: Pros & Cons
• Advantages:
• - Smaller in size
• - More reliable and less costly
• - Multiprogramming introduced
• Disadvantages:
• - Still costly for individuals
• - Required AC environment
Fourth Generation (1971–Present)
• Technology: Microprocessors
• Languages: C, C++, Java etc.
• Introduction of Personal Computers
• Examples: Apple, IBM PC
Fourth Generation: Features
• Microprocessor chip with thousands of ICs
• Very small size, portable computers
• Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) introduced
• Networking and internet development
Fifth Generation (Present & Future)
• Technology: Artificial Intelligence, Quantum
Computing
• Natural Language Processing
• Machine Learning and Robotics
• Examples: AI systems, Quantum Computers
Fifth Generation: Features
• Use of parallel processing & supercomputers
• Ability to understand human language
• Self-learning capabilities
• Applications in robotics, AI assistants,
automation
Comparison of Generations
• 1st Gen: Vacuum Tubes | Machine Language |
ENIAC
• 2nd Gen: Transistors | Assembly Language |
IBM 1401
• 3rd Gen: ICs | High-level Languages | IBM 360
• 4th Gen: Microprocessors | C, C++ | Apple,
IBM PCs
• 5th Gen: AI & Robotics | NLP | Quantum
Computers
Timeline of Generations
• 1940s–1950s: First Generation
• 1956–1963: Second Generation
• 1964–1971: Third Generation
• 1971–Present: Fourth Generation
• Present–Future: Fifth Generation
Impact of Computers on Society
• Automation of tasks
• Global communication
• Scientific research boost
• Business, healthcare, education revolutionized
Future of Computers
• Quantum Computing
• Advanced Artificial Intelligence

• Smarter and more efficient systems
Summary
• Computer Generations = Evolution of
technology
• From vacuum tubes to AI & Quantum
computing
• Every generation brought faster, smaller &
cheaper systems
• Future: Smarter, intelligent, and autonomous
systems
Conclusion
• Computers have evolved dramatically in the
last 80 years.
• Each generation made technology more
powerful & accessible.
• The future promises unimaginable computing
power.
