Who is a Consumer???
• A consumer is someone who purchases the product for
his/her own need and consumes it. A consumer cannot resell
the good or service but can consume it to earn his/her
livelihood and self-employment
• A consumer is any person or group who is the final user of a
product or service. Here are some examples: A person who
pays a hairdresser to cut and style their hair. A company that
buys a printer for company use.
Consumer Rights
Consumer rights are a set of fundamental guarantees for
buyers, ensuring they are protected from unfair business
practices and have fair treatment in the marketplace. These
rights typically include the right to safety, the right to be
informed, the right to choose, the right to be heard, the right
to redress, and the right to consumer education. They exist to
promote fair competition, transparency, and accountability,
helping consumers make informed decisions and resolve
issues with products and services.
How are consumers exploited
• Exploitation in the marketplace happens in various ways. For
example, sometimes traders indulge in unfair trade practices
such as when shopkeepers weigh less than what they should
or when traders add charges that were not mentioned
before, or when adulterated/defective goods are sold.
Consumer Protection Act (1986)
• The Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was an Indian Act established to
protect consumer rights against defective goods, deficient services, and
unfair trade practices by providing a simpler and quicker redressal
mechanism through a three-tier quasi-judicial system of consumer
forums and commissions. This Act, enacted to safeguard consumer
interests and promote fair commerce, established district, state, and
national-level bodies to hear consumer disputes. It was a significant
piece of legislation in India, often called the "Magna Carta" of consumer
protection, but was eventually replaced by the Consumer Protection Act,
2019.
