Photosynthesis
The Process of Converting Light into
Energy
What is Photosynthesis?
• Photosynthesis is the process by which green
plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light
energy into chemical energy stored in glucose.
• It occurs in the chloroplasts using chlorophyll.
Photosynthesis Equation
• 6 CO₂ + 6 H₂O + Light energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6 O₂
• Carbon dioxide + Water + Light energy →
Glucose + Oxygen
Stages of Photosynthesis
• 1. Light-dependent Reactions (in thylakoids)
• - Require light
• - Produce ATP and NADPH
• - Release oxygen
• 2. Light-independent Reactions (Calvin Cycle,
in stroma)
• - Use ATP and NADPH
• - Fix CO₂ to form glucose
Importance of Photosynthesis
• • Provides food (glucose) for plants and other
organisms
• • Releases oxygen essential for life
• • Maintains atmospheric balance of O₂ and
CO₂
• • Basis of energy flow in ecosystems
