POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION
Refers to a function of degree n in one variable x,
where n is a non-negative integer that can be
expressed in the form:

Note the following :

● , , ,…, are called real numbers

● Each monomial in this sum is called a term of the
polynomial
● The coefficient is the constant term
POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION
Refers to a function of degree n in one variable x,
where n is a non-negative integer that can be
expressed in the form:

Note the following :

● The coefficient with the highest power is the leading
coefficient
● The term is the leading term

A polynomial function written in this way, with terms in

descending degree, is written in standard form.
POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION
Another way of writing a polynomial is when it is
represented in its factored form
Illustration:
+6-16x-96
This is an example of polynomial in standard form.
● The highest degree of is 3.
● Its leading term is where its leading coefficient is 1
● Its constant term is -96
Example 1
a. Is 6x - 1 a polynomial function?
● Yes!
This is a type of polynomial function wherein the
degree is 3, the leading term is , its leading coefficient
is 1 and the constant term is -1.

b. Is a polynomial function?
● Yes!
The type of function is linear since the highest degree
of x is 1. Its leading term is -3x in which its leading
coefficient is -3 . On the other hand, the constant term
is 0
Example 1

c. Is a polynomial function?

● No!
Since the degree of x is and it is not an integer.

INTERCEPTS
The x and y values that will touch or cross the two
axes are called intercepts. The table below show
the ways on how to obtain the x and y-intercepts.
Linear function

The x intercepts are x-values in

the graph that will cross or touch
the x-axis.
To find x-intercepts of a function:
The y intercepts are y-values in
Let y=0, then solve for x the graph that will cross or touch
the y-axis.
To find y-intercepts of a function:
Let x=0, then solve for y

GRAPHING POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION
USING INTERVALS

One way of graphing a polynomial is through

intervals. Intervals are x-values that we can
substitute to the factors that will result to either
positive or negative integer. If the result is positive,
then the behavior of the graph is above the x-axis.
On the other hand, if the result is negative, then
the behavior of the graph is below the x-axis.
GRAPHING POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION
USING INTERVALS
The following is the step-by-step procedure in
graphing a polynomial function using its intervals:
Step 1: Transform the polynomial function in
standard form into factored form.
Step 2: Determine the intercepts of the polynomial
function.
GRAPHING POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION
USING INTERVALS
Step 3: Find the behavior of the curve in each
interval, by:
a.) Picking a test value within each interval.
b.) Solve for the value of each factor, using this test
value. Take note of the signs.
c.) Using the signs, compute for the sign of the
original polynomial function under each test value.
d.) In multiplying the signs of the factors, if it is:
[Link], the graph will proceed above the
x-axis.
ii. NEGATIVE, the graph will proceed below

coordinate plane.
