Speaking: Rapport Building
• Trust and connection with audience.
• If you are asking people to adopt a new way of
thinking, an alternate viewpoint or change their
behaviour then it is crucial to develop trust and
connection and rapport.
• Some common techniques to keep in mind:
a. Remember people names
b. Find common ground
c. Actively listen
d. Ask questions
e. Mind your language
f. Reserve judgement

1. Find times to connect
2. Be friendly but genuine
3. Ask questions about the persons work, life or interests
4. Remember details from your conversation-especially their
name
5. Build on previous conversation with follow-up questions
6. Answer their questions about yourself.

creates trust, boosts engagement and portrays what is
