Introduction
• First appears in a Latin manuscript “Methodus tangentium inversa,
seu de functionibus” by Gottfried Wilhelm Lebinitz in 1673
• Used by Johan Bernoulli, in a letter to Leibnitz 1698
• Function is found in English in 1779 in Chambers’ Cyclopedia
• A special type of relation
• A rule, which produces new elements out of some given elements.
• Terms used such as ‘map’, ‘mapping’ to denote a function.
Definition
A relation from a set A to a set B is said to be a function if every element
of A has one and only one image in set B
Or
A function f is a relation from a non empty set A to a non empty set B
the domain of f is A and no two distinct ordered pairs in f have the same first
element.
i.e. if f is a function from set A to B and (a,b)f, then f(a)=b,
where, b is called the image of a under f
and, a is called the preimage of b under f.
Definition
Consider the following relations
1. Let A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} and R be relation defined on set A by,
R = {(x,y) : y = x+1}
