Place Value
• • Place value shows the value of each digit in a
number.
• • Example: In 5,432:
• - 5 is in the thousands place → 5,000
• - 4 is in the hundreds place → 400
• - 3 is in the tens place → 30
• - 2 is in the ones place → 2
Rounding Numbers
• • Rules of rounding:
• - If the digit is less than 5, keep the same.
• - If the digit is 5 or more, round up.
• • Example: 46.78 rounded to 1 decimal place =
46.8
• • Example: 2,347 rounded to nearest hundred
= 2,300
Significant Figures
• • Significant figures show the precision of a
number.
• • Rules:
• 1. All non-zero digits are significant.
• 2. Zeros between digits are significant.
• 3. Leading zeros are not significant.
• 4. Trailing zeros in decimals are significant.
• • Example: 0.00456 → 3 s.f.
