LESSON 14
FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT
OBJECTIVES
In this lesson, you will be able to:
• differentiate formative
assessment from summative
tests;
• apply formative assessment
strategies in formulating
instructional plans; and
• develop an instructional plan
using formative assessment
strategies.
INTRODUCTION
The term “ assessment “ in
education refers to the wide range
of techniques or instruments that
teachers employ to assess,
evaluate, and record students
academic readiness, learning
progress, skill development, or
educational needs.
Formative assessments are
designed around the aim to
determine what the learners
Formative know as they are in the process
of learning. It is used mainly to
Asseessm gather information about
ent learners performance, and use
that to make informed decision
on future instruction.
It is called informative assessment as it
provides information to the teacher on the
performance of the learners as they go
through the learning experience.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE
ASSESSMENT?
• Formative assessment is a type of
assessment that is used to help students
learn. It provides feedback to students to
improve their understanding of the
material.
• Summative assessment, on the other
hand, is a type of assessment used to
evaluate students understanding of the
• For effective implementation of
formative assessment in the
classroom, it has to be planed and
strategic.
• As they are usually not graded,
formative assesment strategies are
mainly used to guide instruction.
A FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT SYSTEM TO
BE USED IN THE CLASSROOM TRIES TO
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
Where am I

objectives are or what the general goal of the
lesson is to give them an idea of what is expected
of them in the lesson or unit.
• I can identify a sequence of events, ( beginning,
middle, and end) in a story.
• I can draw and write sentences about these
actions using signal words to indicate the

As important as gathering information
to the learners progress is providing
them with feedback to let them
determine how they are faring. This is
where the essence of feedback comes
in, as feedback provides the learners
with a picture about their succes and
needs in order to improve their
performance.

WHAT CAN I DO TO

• Teachers provide the learners with
a plan and activities to help them
attain the learning objectives.
HERE ARE SOME SIMPLE FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES THAT CAN BE
USED IN THE CLASSROOM:
• Goal checklist
• Exit slips
• Quizzes
• Classroom Observations
• Projects
• Tests
• Tasks
• Ask Questions
• Have students share their
work in the class
• Whole-class discussion
BENEFITS OF FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT
When used effectively, formative assessment
can;
[Link] teachers understand what students know
and do not know so they can adjust their
instruction accordingly.
[Link] student engagement and ownership of
learning by involving then in the assessment
process.
3. Determine which students need more help and
who are ready to move on to the next topic.
4. Help identify which teaching methods are most
effective for each students.
5. Help build student confidence by showing them
that their teachers are interested in their progress
and care about their success.
“Effective teaching not only involves
imparting significant information and
understanding to students, but also
involves assessing and evaluating the
student’s understanding of this
information, so that the rest of the
teaching can be matched to the present
understanding of the students.”
