THE AVERAGES
The mode
The mode of a set of data is the value which
occurs most often
EXAMPLE
Find the mode of this data
1, 5, 2, 0, 4, 2, 1, 2, 2, 3
Put the numbers in order so it is easier to spot
similar numbers
0, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5
The mode is 2 because the number 2 appears four
times

Find the mode of this data
2, 5, 3, 4, 0, 1, 6
Put the numbers in order so it is easier to spot
similar numbers
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
There is no mode because there is no number that
appears more than another

Find the mode of this data
3, 4, 1, 2, 6, 5, 2, 3
Put the numbers in order so it is easier to spot
similar numbers
1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6
The mode is 2 and 3 because the number 2 and 3
appear twice, which is more than any other
number

The median
The median is the middle value when the data is
arranged in order of size, or the mean of the two
middle values
EXAMPLE
Find the median of this set of data
5, 7, 9, 4, 1, 3, 7, 4, 6
Put the numbers in order
1,
/ /3,/4,/4, 5,/ 6,
/ 7,
/ 7,
/ 9
The median is 5
Cross the numbers
off from each end

EXAMPLE
Find the median of this set of data
6, 8, 3, 7, 5, 3, 7, 2
Put the numbers in order
/ /3, /3, 5, 6,/ 7,/ 7,/ 8
2,
The median is

The mean
The mean of a set of data is the sum of the values
divided by the number of values
EXAMPLE
Find the mean of this set of data
3, 8, 4, 7, 7, 6, 4, 1
Add up the values
3 + 8 + 4 + 7 + 7 + 6 + 4 + 1 = 40
And divide it by 8 because there are 8 values
40
