SOLVING PROBLEM
George Polya is known as the father of modern mathematical
[Link] 1945, he proposed a book "How to solve it", in
which he explains all the four steps. According to Polya, the sequence
of all the four steps in problem-solving is as: Understand the
problem.
Polya's four step method for problem solving is
1) Understand the Problem-Make sure you understand what the
question is asking and what information will be used to solve the
problem.
2) Devise a Plan-Figure out what method you will use to solve the
problem.
3) Carry out the Plan-Use that method to solve the problem
4) Look Back-Double check your answer and make sure it is
reasonable.
So by Polya Method , I create the easy method to remember how to
solve the problem ; that is ‘ Butterfly Method ’
1) Understand the Problem-Make
sure you understand what the 2) Devise a Plan-Figure
question is asking and what out
information will be used to what method you will
solve the problem. use
to solve the problem.
3) Carry out the Plan-Use 4) Look Back-Double check your
that method to solve answer and make sure it is
the reasonable.
problem
The picture shows two books , A and B . The length and width of the
books are same but the thickness is [Link] thickness of book A is
4cm more than the thickness of book B.
Calculate the mass , in kg , for book A .
Book A
Plan the strategy
Understand the problem
- The thickness of book B , 2cm Book B A
- The thickness of book A , 4cm more
Thickness 2 cm 2cm + 4cm
than book B
- The mass of book B 500g . Mass 500g ????
- Calculate the mass of book A in kg
Book B
Solve Check
Mass 500g
2cm length The thickness of book A = 2cm + 4cm = 6cm Thickness Mass
The thickness = The Mass
6cm = 3 times of 2cm 2cm 500g
SO 2cm 500g
width the mass also 3 times
+ 2cm + 500g
500g x 3 = 1500g
1500g = 1.5 kg 6cm 1500g
My sister is preparing chocolate milk by referring to the recipe shown in
picture .
What is mass of chocolate pieces that she needs if 0.96 litre of fresh
milk is used ?
Plan the strategy
Understand the problem
120 ml
Chocolate Milk Recipe - 120 ml of fresh milk needs 55 g 55 g
of chocolate pieces .
( one glass ) - How many grams of chocolate 0.96 litre
pieces need if 0.96 litre of fresh milk
is used ? ?g
12 ml of fresh milk
100g of ice cubes
Solve Check
10 g of sugar
55 g of chocolate pieces 0.96 litre = 960 ml
120 ml ------- 55g
Whipping Cream ( optional ) 960 ml ------- 960 x 55g = 440 g 440 g
120 8 x 120 ml = 960 ml
OR = 960 1000 = 0.96 litre
960 ml = 8 # 960 ml fresh milk can
120 ml make 8 glasses
# 1 glass --- 55g chocolate
8 glasses ---- 8 x 55g = 440 g
My brother rides his motocycles from home to his college every day . He
uses 3 litre of petrol for every 100 km . The distance from home to
college shown in the picture .
Calculate the total volume of petrol, in ml , thet he uses for a round
trip .
College Plan the strategy
9 km Understand the problem
- 3 litre of petrol is used for 100 km
- Rides Distance Petrol
Distance from home to college :
12 km +23 km + 16 km + 9 km = 60 km To college 60 km 3 litre
16 km
- The total volume of petrol used for To a round 120 km ????
23 km one round trip trip
Solve Check
100 km 3 litre
12 km ÷5 ÷5 100 km ------- 3 litre
20 km 0.6 litre
120 km -------- ??? Litre
100 km + 20 km = 120 km
3 litre + 0.6 litre = 3.6 litre 120 x 3 litre = 18 litre
= 3600 ml 100 5
Home = 3.6 litre
