PACKING LIST
A Packing List is a detailed document that provides information
about the contents of a shipment, including the description,
quantity, weight, and dimensions of each item within the package.
It is an essential document in international trade and is often used
in conjunction with the commercial invoice, bill of lading, and other
shipping documents.
KEY FEATURES OF A
PACKING LIST:
1. Contents: It typically includes the following details:
Description of Goods: A brief description of each item being shipped.
Quantity: The number of units or items in each package or carton.
Weight: The weight of each package, including any packaging material.
Dimensions: The size (length, width, height) of each package.
Marks and Numbers: Any unique marks or numbers used to identify the
goods for easier handling and tracking.
Package Type: Type of packaging used (e.g., boxes, pallets, crates).
Shipment Reference Number: A reference number for the shipment, often
matching other documents like the invoice or bill of lading.
2. Purpose:
Customs Clearance: Customs authorities often require the packing list to
confirm the details of the shipment, including the number of packages and
their contents.
Shipping & Handling: Helps in organizing and loading goods for shipment and
is useful for the receiving party to inspect the goods upon arrival.
Verification: Ensures that the goods listed in the commercial invoice match
what is physically shipped and received.
Insurance: The packing list is also useful for insurance purposes, ensuring
that the goods are covered based on their type, quantity, and value.
3. Issuer: The packing list is generally prepared by the exporter, shipper, or
manufacturer.
How It’s Used:
Exporter: The exporter prepares the packing list when goods are
packed and ready for shipment. It accompanies the shipment along
with other documents like the commercial invoice and bill of lading.
Importer: Upon receiving the goods, the importer uses the packing
list to check that the correct quantity and type of goods have been
delivered and to confirm that the shipment is in good condition.
