FOSSILS

FOSSILS
• Fossils are the preserved remains or traces of
ancient organisms, providing a glimpse into
FOSSILS
Earth's past life. They can be the actual
remains of an organism, like bones or shells,

or traces of its existence, such as footprints or
burrows. Fossilization, the process of
becoming a fossil, typically involves burial in
sediment and subsequent mineral
replacement.

of the organism itself, such as bones,

• Trace Fossils:

-These are evidence of an

How Fossils Form:
1. Burial:
The organism dies and is quickly buried by sediment

like mud, sand, or silt.
2. Mineralization:
Over time, minerals in BY:
the surrounding sediment seep
into the organism's remains, replacing the original material

and hardening into rock.

3. Erosion and Exposure:
The fossil-bearing rock layers can be brought to the
surface through geological processes like uplift and erosion,
where they may be discovered.
