Question Tags
What are Question Tags?
• Short questions added at the end of a statement.
• Used in spoken English to keep conversation flowing.
• Helps confirm or check information.
• Example: “You’re a student, aren’t you?”
Where do we use them?
• Friendly conversation: Nice day, isn’t it?
• Confirm facts: She’s from Mumbai, isn’t she?
• Make requests: Pass me the pen, will you?
• Encourage answers: You’ve done your homework, haven’t
you?
Basic Rules
• Rule 1: Positive statement → Negative tag
• Rule 2: Negative statement → Positive tag
• Rule 3: Use correct auxiliary/modal verb
• Rule 4: Use same subject pronoun
Positive & Negative Statement
Statement Tag Result
She is happy. Isn’t she? Positive → Negative
He doesn’t like tea. Does he? Negative → Positive
They will come. Won’t they? Positive → Negative
We haven’t met before. Have we? Negative → Positive
If there is NO Auxiliary Verb
• When the main verb is simple present or past, use do /
does / did.
• You play chess, don’t you?
• He likes coffee, doesn’t he?
• She went home, didn’t she?
Common Mistakes
• 🚫 Forgetting the pronoun: She is singing, isn’t? ✖️
• ✅ Correct: She is singing, isn’t she?
• 🚫 Using wrong auxiliary: He plays guitar, didn’t he? ✖️
• ✅ Correct: He plays guitar, doesn’t he?
• 🚫 Double negative: You aren’t coming, aren’t you? ✖️
• ✅ Correct: You aren’t coming, are you?
