Homework/assignments
• Activity 10 on page 19 and activity 11 on Page 22
Peer Review Activity
• Read your partner’s academic paragraph (Your
Previous HW) and give helpful feedback to improve their
writing.
• Please focus on structure, clarity, and grammar.
Reading Time
1. Please open your books to pages 9, and 10.
2. Read the paragraphs, then answer the follow up questions of each
paragraph regarding the four main features of a paragraph.

• Step 1: While reading, you will:
• Read it silently. Take your time and focus on understanding the main ideas and details.
• Complete the activity 12 on page 24
• Step 2: After reading, you will:
• Work in pairs or small groups to discuss what you understood from the text.
• Share the main idea of the passage and explain it in your own words

The first sentence must

I love the color red. No other color symbolizes so
many different emotions and experiences. Life would be
very boring without the color red. Fires would not burn in
the same way. The sunset would not be interesting, and
blood would not be so surprisingly beautiful. Red is
powerful when it appears in nature, and it is also
powerful when it appears in our emotions. Red is love.
Red is anger. Red is beauty. I like to live life in a strong
way, so I think I will always admire the color red.

Basic Parts of A Paragraph
Parts of a Paragraph
• Topic sentence: States the main idea of the paragraph.
It tells the reader what the paragraph will be about. A
good topic sentence does two things: 1. It names a
subject 2.) It give the focus or main point
Topic Sentence: Canada is one of the best countries in the world
to live in.
• Supporting Details: Sentences that are connected to
the main idea. They include information or details the
reader needs in order to understand the topic.
• Closing: Sums up the paragraph’s message. It reminds
the readers of the topic.
The topic sentence
• It introduces a new idea. It presents the topic
and explains what the writer will say about the
topic. This explanation is called the
Controlling idea

A Sample Paragraph
(Topic Sentence)
Canada is one of the best countries in the world to live
in. First, Canada has an excellent health care system. All
Canadians have access to medical services at a reasonable price.

Second, Canada has a high standard of education. Students are

For homework, I want each of you to write
one paragraph. You can choose any topic
you like – your favorite place, your hobby,
your village, etc.
Make sure it has:
1. One topic sentence,
2. At least two supporting sentences,
and
3. One concluding sentence.
