Module 02:
Analysis of Statically Determinate Rigid Joint Plane
Frames
Topics to be Covered

• Frames
• Shear and moment diagrams for frames
• Examples
Analysis of Statically Determinate Frames
Frames:
• Frames are often used in buildings and are composed of beams and
columns that are either pin or fixed connected.
• Frames can be extend in two (plane frames) or three
dimensions (space frames).
• The loading on a frame causes
bending of its members,
and if it has rigid joint
connections.
Analysis of Statically Determinate Frames
Frames:
• Many structures, such as buildings and bridges, are composed of
frames

Analysis of Statically Determinate Frames
Shear and Moment Diagrams for Frames:
The following is a procedure for constructing the shear and moment
diagrams for a frame:
1. Determine the support reactions for the frame, if possible.
[Link] the support reactions A, V, and M at
the end of each member using the method of sections.
3. Construct both shear and moment diagrams just as before.

• We will use the following sign convention:
Always draw the moment diagram on the compression side of the
member.
