Introduction to education
Objectives :
At the end of this chapter, students are expected to:
• Define education, and discuss its functions
• Describe the aims of Nursing education
• Discuss the r/n ship b/n education and philosophies.

 Education: Is the process of changing the

behavior of students in desired directions.

 Also defined as an orderly, deliberate, and

sustained effort to transmit or develop

knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes or habits.

• The term education has its origin in the Latin word

educo where e means ‘out of’ and duco means ‘I lead ‘
accordingly education means ‘I lead out of darkness
into brightness’.

• In a broad sense it means not only to elicit creative

thought and knowledge from the student, but to draw
humankind out of the predicament it is in.

• And that predicament, according to both Jewish and

Christian viewpoints, radically differs from the original
perfection God established at creation” (Youngberg,
1994, p. 69).

 Types of Education
1. Formal Education:
- is a consciously and deliberately planned for the
modification of behavior with the particular end in
view.

- learning is carried out in specially built institutions

such as schools, colleges.

- what is taught is carefully structured by means of

syllabuses and timetable.

• An external administrative body usually carefully

supervises the teaching provided.

• students who fulfill the set criteria are awarded

certificates.

2. Non-formal Education:
- is an alternative arrangement of education for those
who cannot attend formal institutions.
- this could be through correspondence course,
broadcasting programs, satellite
- less structured than formal education.
- there is more flexibility concerning places and methods
of learning.

• is not pre-planned education and quite incidental.
– E.g., when children learn from the community (they
pick-up the ways and habits of the adult members of
their community and try to adopt them).
• almost unconscious learning takes place.
• no award of certificate.

1. Personal development – including intellectual
and spiritual development.

2. Vocational preparation – in terms of necessary

practical skills and character qualities.

3. Social training – in which young people are

initiated into societal service at local and national
level.

a. Functions towards Individuals;
b. Functions towards Society;
c. Functions towards Nation.

 A . Functions Towards Individuals

There are 3 subdivisions:

1. Education as growth: every child is immature at birth.

He/she becomes mature when she/he goes through

deliberate education.

• Growth means not only physical growth but it should

be holistic. i.e. , mental, physical, spiritual, social,

psychological (there should be an integrated growth).

2. Education as direction: direction is fixation
of activity in a proper response by

elimination of unnecessary and confusing

movement.

• It is guiding to a proper goal and guiding

to perfection in light.

3. Preparation of child for responsibility of adult life
This is the chief function of education.
‒ Children of today are an adult of tomorrow.
‒ Education is important to fit the young for coping
with the future.

 B . Functions Towards Society
There are two functions of education towards society:

1. Socialization: education has a social function.

Human beings live in the society and work for
society. Human development comes from society.

• Individuals learn experiences from their ancestors

through socialization.

• Every thing needs modification and this can
be achieved through education.

 C. Functions towards the nation
 Ensuring national development: education serves to
show an individual the rising generation and the
direction of individual towards nation.

 Promoting national integrity (national consensus): in

culture diversified countries like Ethiopia, education
plays a great role to bring unity and integration.

 Continuous supply of skilled workforce to the nation

 Developing leaders: people who carried out

responsibilities in social, religious, and political systems
are trained.

 Philosophies of Education
Definition:
• PHILOSOPHY is the branch of knowledge or
academic study devoted to the systematic
examination of basic concepts such as truth,
existence, reality, causality, and freedom.

• The term philosophy has a Greek origin, i.e.

Philosophia. Phileo means ‘love’ and sophia
means ‘wisdom’
