Understanding the Rock Cycle

The document explains the rock cycle, detailing the three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic, and how they transform through processes like melting, cooling, weathering, and erosion. It emphasizes the slow nature of rock formation and the importance of rocks in understanding Earth's history and resources. Additionally, it highlights the role of rocks in various applications, from construction to electronics.

The Rock Cycle: Earth's

Recycling Process
Introduction to Rocks and the Rock Cycle

● There are three main types of rocks:

● 1. Igneous
● 2. Sedimentary
● 3. Metamorphic
● Rocks are constantly changing from one
type to another
● This process is called the rock cycle
● The rock cycle shows how Earth is like a
giant rock recycling machine
● What types of rocks have you seen or
collected before?
Igneous Rocks: Born
from Fire
● Formed when molten rock
(magma) cools and hardens
● Two types:
1. Intrusive: cool slowly underground
(e.g. granite)
2. Extrusive: cool quickly above
ground (e.g. basalt)
● Often found near volcanoes
● Can you think of any famous
volcanoes?
Sedimentary Rocks: Layers of History
● Made from particles of other rocks or remains of
living things
● Form in layers over long periods of time
● Often contain fossils
● Examples: sandstone, limestone, coal
● What do you think we can learn from fossils in
sedimentary rocks?
Metamorphic Rocks: Changed by Heat and
Pressure
● Formed when other rocks are changed
by heat and pressure
● Two main types:
● 1. Foliated: have layers (e.g. slate, schist)
● 2. Non-foliated: no layers (e.g. marble,
quartzite)
● Can form deep underground or near
volcanoes
● How do you think rocks might change
under extreme heat and pressure?
The Rock Cycle in Action
● Rocks are constantly changing from
one type to another
● Main processes in the rock cycle:
● 1. Melting
● 2. Cooling
● 3. Weathering and erosion
● 4. Heat and pressure
● The cycle has no beginning or end
● Can you describe how an igneous rock
might become sedimentary?
Weathering and Erosion: Breaking Down Rocks

● Weathering breaks rocks into smaller pieces

● Erosion moves these pieces to new locations
● Can be caused by:
● Water, Wind, Ice
● Plants and animals
● What examples of weathering or erosion have you
seen in your area?
Rock Formation Takes Time
● Rock changes happen very
slowly
● Can take thousands or millions
of years
● Example: Grand Canyon rock
layers formed over millions of
years
● How old do you think the oldest
rocks on Earth might be?
Rocks Tell Earth's
Story
● Rocks provide clues about Earth's
past
● Can show:
● Ancient environments
● Past climate changes
● Evolution of life
● Geologists study rocks to learn
about Earth's history
● What do you think we could learn
from a rock containing dinosaur
fossils?
The Importance of Rocks
● Rocks and minerals are used in
many ways:
● Building materials
● Jewelry
● Electronics
● Fuel (coal, oil)
● Studying rocks helps us:
● Understand Earth's history
● Find important resources
● Predict natural disasters
● What are some ways you use rocks
or minerals in your daily life?
