Network Basics Training Overview

The document outlines the first day of a basic network training session, covering key concepts such as the definition of a network, types of networks (LAN, MAN, WAN), and the importance of network devices and transmission media. It details the roles of end-devices, network devices, and various topologies used in networking. Additionally, it discusses the functions of specific network devices like switches, routers, and firewalls, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of different network topologies.

BASIC NETWORK

TRAINING DAY ONE

TRAINING OUTLINE SESSION ONE

• Understanding of network ?
• Explanation of network .

• Network Devices and media of transmission ?

• Understanding of network devices , media .

• Explanation Network Topologies ?

• How can connect components you have .
UNDERSTANDING OF NETWORK CONCEPT ?

 Def : collection of computers and devices connected

via communication devices and transmission media .

 Or network is a system of interconnection devices

like computers, printers and other devices that
communicate each other and share resource.
UNDERSTANDING OF NETWORK CONCEPT ?
WHY USE NETWORK ?

 Easily share files and data

 Share resources such as printers and internet
connections
 Store data centrally (using a file server ) for ISP
ease to access and backup
 Lowered costs
 Remote access
 Data protection
TYPES OF NETWORK ?

There are different types of networks that are

classified based on their capacity and distances
such us .
Lan ( local area network ).
Man (Metropolitan Area Network).
Wan ( wide area network ).
TYPES OF NETWORK ?
Lan ( local area network )
Def : “ Lan is a network that
connect computers and other
devices within a geographical
area – like school or building
so they can communicate and
share resource (like files ,
printers)”
TYPES OF NETWORK ?
 Man (Metropolitan Area
Network).
Def : “ is a network that
spans a city or large campus
connecting multiple Lan
within same geographical
region such us – city , town
or large institution”
TYPES OF NETWORK ?
 Man (wide area network ).

 Def : “ is a large network

that connects and smaller
networks ( like Lans and
mans) across long distance –
cities , countries ,or even
globally . The internet is the
biggest example of wan”
UNDERSTANDING OF DEVICES AND MEDIA ?
To build or set up a network,
you need three things: end-
devices, network deices,
and transmission media.
What are the functions and
roles of these three
components to building a
network .
END-DEVICES ALSO CALLED (host devices )?

Devices used directly by people to send or receive

data. They are called "end" because they are the
source or destination of data on the network.
A server is a powerful
A client is any device or program computer or program that
that requests services or provides services or data to
resources from a server.
clients over a network.
🔹 Characteristics of a Client: 🔹 Characteristics of a Server:
i. Makes a request (like accessing a website i. Waits for client requests, then
or downloading a file). responds
ii. Doesn’t provide services to others ii. Offers resources or services (like
websites, files, email, printing)
END-DEVICES ALSO CALLED (host devices )?

WHAT ARE THE NETWORK DEVICES ?
 Network devices are hardware components used to
connect computers, servers, printers, phones, and other
devices within a network. These devices manage data
traffic, communication, security, and resource sharing
 ✅ Types of Network Devices and Their Functions:
1. switch
2. Router
3. access points
4. firewall
5. repeater
NETWORK DEVICES ?

1. Switch
📍 Function: Connects multiple devices in a
LAN
⚙️Forwards data based on MAC addresses
🧠 Works at Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) of the
OSI model
2. Router
📍 Function: Connects different networks
🌐 Routes data using IP addresses
🧠 Works at Layer 3 (Network Layer) of the
OSI model
NETWORK DEVICES ?
[Link] point
📍 Function: Allows wireless devices to
connect to a wired network
📶 Used to expand Wi-Fi in offices,
homes, schools
🧠 Works at Layer 2

📍 [Link]
Function: Monitors and controls
network security
🔐 Blocks or allows traffic based on
security rules
🧠 Can operate at multiple layers,
NETWORK DEVICES ?

5. Repeater
📍Function: extends network signal over long
distances
⚙️Used in large buildings or long cable runs
🧠 Works at Layer 1
TRANSMISSION MEDIA ?
 What is Transmission Media in Networking?
 Transmission media the path or channel used to carry data from
one device to another in a network. It is what connects computers,
routers, switches, and other network devices. And there are two
main types
1. Guided Media (Wired Media) - Data is transmitted through
physical cables.
📌 Types of Guided Media:
TRANSMISSION MEDIA ?
2. Unguided Media (Wireless Media) - Data is transmitted through air
using radio waves, microwaves, or infrared.
TOPOLOGIES ?
 Def : network topology is how devices are arrangement and connect
each others. There are many types that can arranged such us BUS
topology , RING topology , MESH topology , STAR topology are
commonly use for Lan networks .
➖ Bus Topology
 All devices share a single backbone cable.

 Advantages:
Simple and cheap to set up
Requires less cable

 Disadvantages:
If the main cable fails, the network stops
Heavy traffic slows performance
TOPOLOGIES ?

🔄 Ring Topology
 Devices are connected in a circular loop.

Advantages:
There is no data collisions as data only travel one
direction
Disadvantages:
Failure of one device affects the whole network
TOPOLOGIES ?

Mesh Topology
 Every device is connected to every other device.

Advantages:
Very reliable
Provides multiple paths for data

Disadvantages:
Expensive and complex
Hard to install and manage
TOPOLOGIES ?

🌟 Star Topology
 All devices are connected to a central switch or hub.

Advantages:
Easy to add or remove devices
If one device fails, others still work

Disadvantages:
If the central hub fails, the whole network goes down
