INTEGRITY ASSESSMENT OF ENGINEERING
2
MATERIALS
Integrity assessment of engineering materials refers to
the evaluation of their structural soundness, reliability,
and fitness for service under operational conditions.
It plays a critical role in ensuring safety, performance,
and durability of components used in industries such as
aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, power plants, and
civil infrastructure.
3 OBJECTIVES OF INTEGRITY ASSESSMENT
• Detect and evaluate defects, damage, or degradation
• Estimate remaining life of materials or components
• Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory
standards
• Prevent catastrophic failure
• Optimize maintenance and inspection schedules
TYPES OF MATERIAL INTEGRITY
4
• A. Structural Integrity: Focuses on the
material’s ability to withstand applied loads
without failure.
• B. Fracture Integrity: Examines susceptibility to
crack initiation and propagation under stress.
• C. Corrosion Integrity: Evaluates degradation
due to chemical or electrochemical reactions.
TYPES OF MATERIAL INTEGRITY
5
• D. Fatigue Integrity: Considers the
effects of cyclic loading and failure due to
fatigue.
• E. Creep Integrity: Assesses long-term
deformation under high temperature and
stress.
6 METHODS OF INTEGRITY ASSESSMENT
A. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
B. Destructive Testing
C. Fracture Mechanics Analysis
D. Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
E. Corrosion and Environmental Testing
7 NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT)
• Detects surface and subsurface
defects without damaging the
component.
• Techniques include:
• Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
• Radiographic Testing (RT)
• Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
• Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)
• Eddy Current Testing (ET)
• Acoustic Emission Testing
8 DESTRUCTIVE TESTING
• Evaluates mechanical properties
via tests such as:
• Tensile testing
• Impact testing (Charpy, Izod)
• Hardness testing
• Fracture toughness testing
• Creep testing
9 FRACTURE MECHANICS ANALYSIS
• Uses parameters like
• stress intensity factor (K),
• crack tip opening displacement (CTOD),
• J-integral to predict crack growth and failure.
10 FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS (FEA)
• Simulates stress, strain, and
deformation behavior under load
using computational models.
11 CORROSION AND ENVIRONMENTAL
TESTING
• This method Involves:
• Salt spray tests,
• Electrochemical impedance,
• Stress corrosion cracking studies.
12 FACTORS AFFECTING MATERIAL
INTEGRITY
• Material composition and microstructure
• Service environment (temperature, pressure,
corrosion)
• Manufacturing defects and residual stresses
• Mechanical loading (static, cyclic, dynamic)
• Operational history and maintenance
13 APPLICATIONS OF MATERIAL INTEGRITY
• Pipeline inspection and safety evaluation
• Aircraft and automotive component life prediction
• Pressure vessel certification
• Power plant turbine and boiler monitoring
• Structural health monitoring of bridges and
buildings
