INTRODUCTION TO NON-COMMUNICABLE
DISEASES (NCDS)
• Definition: Chronic diseases not transmitted from
person to person. Includes cardiovascular diseases,
diabetes, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases.
• Global & National Burden: NCDs cause 71% of global
deaths (WHO).
• In India: NCDs contribute to 60% of all deaths (National
Health Profile, 2021).
OVERVIEW OF DIABETES
•Diabetes: A chronic disease affecting blood sugar
regulation.
• Types: Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes.
• Global Burden: 537 million adults with diabetes (IDF,
2021).
• National Burden: India has 77 million people with
diabetes.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR DIABETES
• Lifestyle Modifications: Healthy diet, regular
physical activity, weight management.
• Screening and Early Detection: Blood sugar
tests for high-risk individuals.
RISK FACTORS FOR DIABETES
• Modifiable: Obesity, physical inactivity,
unhealthy diet.
• Non-modifiable: Age, family history,
ethnicity.
RISK REDUCTION MEASURES
• Primary Prevention: Awareness campaigns on
lifestyle changes.
• Secondary Prevention: Regular check-ups and
blood sugar monitoring.
• Tertiary Prevention: Manage diabetes to prevent
complications.
ROLE OF NURSES IN DIABETES PREVENTION,
CONTROL, AND CARE
•Preventive Role: Health education,
screening, early detection.
• Control Role: Blood sugar monitoring, self-
management support.
• Care Role: Prevent complications, patient
advocacy.
NATIONAL NCD PROGRAMS - DIABETES
•NPCDCS (National Programme for Prevention
and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular
Diseases & Stroke): Focuses on prevention,
control, and early detection.
• Key Components: Community education,
screening, and healthcare professional training.
CHALLENGES IN DIABETES CONTROL AND
PREVENTION
•Lack of Awareness: Many unaware of risk
factors and early signs.
• Limited Access to Healthcare: Especially in
rural areas.
• Cultural Barriers: Dietary habits and
lifestyle practices.
CONCLUSION
•Diabetes is a major global and national
health issue.
• Prevention, early detection, and proper
management are key to reducing its burden.
• Nurses play an important role in education,
