Solving Quadratic Word Problems

The document outlines a systematic approach to solving word problems involving quadratic equations, detailing four key steps: reading the problem, planning the solution by forming an equation, solving the problem, and examining the solution. It provides examples demonstrating how to apply these steps to find unknown variables in various scenarios, such as determining the dimensions of billboards and gardens based on given areas and perimeters. The document emphasizes the importance of checking the solution against the original problem to ensure accuracy.

SOLVING PROBLEMS

INVOLVING
QUADRATIC
EQUATIONS
How to solve a worded
problems?
◦To systematically solve a given problem,
some steps are to be considered.
◦Step 1: READ the problem. To solve a
verbal problem, read the problem
carefully
◦ and explore what the problem is about.
Identify the given, know what is
◦ asked, and choose a variable to
represent the unknown.
How to solve a worded
problems?
Step 2: PLAN the solution. Create an
equation from the statement in the
problem.
◦ Choose the method that best
applies to the problem.
◦a. Extracting the square root c.
Completing square method
◦b. Factoring d. Quadratic formula
Step 3: SOLVE the problem.
Remember the rules and properties in
simplifying.
Step 4: EXAMINE the solution. Use
the solution of the equation to write a
statement that settles the problem.
Check that the conclusion agrees
with the problem situation, otherwise
you have to rework the problem.
Example 1:
The sum of two numbers is
5 and their product is −84.
Find
these two numbers.
Solution 1:
Step 1: Let x = be the number
Remember that if the sum and the product
of the roots of a quadratic equation are
given, the roots can be determined. This
can be done by inspection or by using the
equation is the sum of
the roots and is the product of the roots
◦Example 2.
◦The Local Government of La Union wants
to place a new rectangular billboard to
inform and give awareness to the
residents on how to protect themselves
from the spread of COVID19. Suppose the
length of the billboard to be placed is 6m
longer than its width and the area is112 .
What will be the length and the width of
the billboard?
◦Step 1:
◦Let x = represent the width of
the billboard in meters
◦ x + 6 = represent the length.
◦ Since the area of the
billboard is 112, then (x)(x+6)
= 112.
◦Step 2:
◦The equation (x)(x+6) =
112 is a quadratic equation
that can be written in
◦ the form a + bx + c = 0.
◦Step 4:
◦Substitute the value of x=8
◦ +6x-112=0
◦+6(8)-112=0
◦64+48-112=0
◦0=0
◦A rectangular table has n
Area of 84and a perimeter
of 38m. Find its length and
width.
◦Solution:
let the Perimeter be the 2nd
term( 2l + 2w ), so the
perimeter divided by 2
let the Area be the last term
◦Solution:
perimeter= 38/2= 19
Area=84

-19+ 84=0
◦Solution:
( x -12 ) ( x - 7 )=0
x= 12, x= 7
◦The area of concrete
rectangular pathway is
350and its perimeter
pathway is [Link] is the
length of the pathway?
◦A rectangular table has an
area of 27and a perimeter
of 24ft. What are the
dimensions of the table?
◦An amusement park wants to
place a new rectangular billboard
to inform visitors of their new
attractions. Suppose the length of
the billboard to be plced is 4m
longer than its width and the
area is 96. What will be the length
and the width of the billboard?
◦A rectangular garden has an area
of 84 and a perimeter of 38m.
Find its length and the width.
◦The length of a tarpaulin is 3ft
more than thrice its width and its
area is 126What is the length of
