Starting Windows
When you switch on a computer, all its
parts are checked and you hear a beep
sound. Then the operating system is
loaded in the computer’s memory from
its hard disk. This process is called
booting. It remains in the memory till
the system is on.

Desktop is the first screen you


see after you turn on a
computer. You have learnt about
taskbar, the start button and the
desktop icons.

Taskbar
Taskbar is the blue bar at the bottom of the
desktop. It shows the application that are being
used by you. It also allows you to quickly switch
between them. It even displays time.
Start button
Start button is found on the left
side of the taskbar. This is a
very important button. It is used
WINDOWS 7 for opening programs,
applications and documents,
changing settings, turning off
the computer and many other
WINDOWS XP
purpose.
When you click on start button,
it operns a menu or a list. This
is called Start menu. Start menu
gives you a list of the the
software programs and
documents on the computer.

Icons
Icons

Icons, are the small picture on


the desktop. These are used to
open software programs etc.
desktop icons are also called
Shortcuts. Some icons are found
on all desktops.
