What Is Rounding Off

Rounding off means a number is made simpler by keeping its


value intact but closer to the next number. It is done for
whole numbers, and for decimals at various places of
hundreds, tens, tenths, etc. Rounding off numbers is done to
preserve the significant figures.
Here is an interesting song on rounding off for you –

■ Find the place and underline the digit


■ Move to the right and circle it , get it ?
■ Four or less , let me rest
■ Five or more add one more
■ Now flex your muscles like a hero!
■ Digits to the right change to zero!
■ All other digits remain the same

Types of rounding off

■ There are basically two types of rounding off:

 Rounding off to tens


 Rounding off to hundreds
Rounding off to nearest 10’s

In order to round to the nearest 10 : Check if the number is


a multiple of 10 , if it is, do nothing. If the ones digit is less
than 5 , round down to the previous 10 . If the ones digit is
5 or more than 5 , round up to the next 10 .
For example:
Rounding off to nearest 100’s

We round to the nearest hundreds place by examining


the tens place. If the tens value is between 0 and 4, the
number must be rounded down, and if the tens value is
between 5 and 9, the number must be rounded up.
How Is Rounding Off Useful In Life

■ Rounding can be useful in life by allowing you to add numbers in


your head quickly. For example, if you need to estimate the total
cost of items in a shopping cart, rounding the prices to the nearest
whole number can make mental calculations easier.
■ Similarly while calculating distances between two places, it
becomes lot more easier to calculate. For example travelling from
Chandigarh to Delhi; Chandigarh to Karnal is 128kms can be
rounded to 130;karnal to Delhi is 118kms can be rounded to 120;
so approximately the total distance from Chandigarh to Delhi is
130 +120 which is equal to 250. Thus calculating distance easily.
