RHINITIS?
• Inflammatory disorder
• Characterized by sneezing, itching,
nasal obstruction, and clear rhinorrhea
• IgE-mediated reaction to specific
allergens
• Symptoms may be seasonal (hay
fever) or perennial
CLINICAL FEATURES

• Pale nasal
mucosa
• Congested nasal
turbinates
• Mucoid
rhinorrhea
• Conjunctival
itching and
redness
COMMON ALLERGENS

• Pollen
• Spores
• Dust mites
• Other inhaled
allergens
DIAGNOSIS

• Nasal smear to demonstrate


eosinophilia
• Skin or serologic tests for specific IgE
response
• Helps differentiate from other similar
conditions
TREATMENT

• Allergen avoidance
• Topical nasal steroid sprays for prevention
• Oral antihistamines for symptom
relief(Loratidine, Cetrizine, Levocetrizine)
• Oral decongestants – Phenylephrine- May cause
increased BP and cause headaches and irritability
• Topical decongestants – generally discouraged
due to rebound congestion and rhinitis
