DISASTER RISK
Hazard: A dangerous phenomenon,
substance, human activity or condition
that may cause loss of life, injury or
other health impacts, property
damage, loss of livelihoods and
services, social and economic
disruption, or environmental damage.
Exposure: The presence of people,
livelihoods, infrastructure, or
economic, social, or cultural assets
in places and settings that could be
adversely affected by a hazard.
(e.g., houses built on a floodplain,
schools near a volcano, population
density in coastal areas).
Vulnerability: The characteristics
and circumstances of a community,
system or asset that make it
susceptible to the damaging effects
of a hazard.
Disaster Risk: The potential for a
disaster to occur. It is often expressed as
the probability of loss of life, injury or
destroyed or damaged assets which could
occur to a system, society or a
community in a given period of time,
determined by the product of hazard,
exposure, and vulnerability.
