Background of the Study
In the Philippines, rice crops are extremely
important. It is a staple food in daily life and is
present in both homemade and gourmet meals
almost 100% of the time. Indeed, the country has
vast reserves of rice-enough to feed everyone in
its islands, and enough to export to other
countries. The climate and the environmental
conditions in the Philippines are not the problems
in fact, they are perfect for growing rice crops.
The problem is the insects to be more specific.
The amount of damage they can do to the fields
is astronomical, considering their size.
Problem & Hypothesis
This study focused on the efficacy of cassava (M.
esculenta) leaves extracts and chili pepper as
insecticide against insects in the rice fields.
Specifically, it aimed to answer the following
problems:
How will the use of Cassava Leaves extracts and
Chili Pepper extracts affect the following:
Survival time of insects
Number of Insects Survived
Is there a significant difference among the different
concentrations of Cassava leaves extracts with
Chili Pepper extracts against insects?
Problem & Hypothesis
Ho
• There is no significant difference of
the
cassava leaves extracts and chili
pepper extracts on the survival time
of the insects.
• There is no significant differences
among the different concentrations
of leaves extracts with chili pepper.
Significance of the Study
The Study will benefit the following:
Farmers. If the study prove that it can
reduced the number of insects the
number yielded crops will definitely
increase. The rice products will
become enough to sustain people’s
need.
Students. This study may serve as a
guide and reference for the students
undertaking similar studies.
Significance of the Study
Community. It will protect the
community especially to the rice
fields from the infestations of the
insects.
Future Researchers. This research
will be useful reference for the
researchers who would plan to make
any related study.
Definition of Terms
The key terms in the study were given the following
operational definitions.
Cassava. Refers to a starchy tuberous root
of a tropical tree, used as food in tropical
countries. The Cassava leaves is one of the main
ingredient for the treatment of the study.
Chili Pepper. Refers to a small hot-tasting
pod of a variety of capsicum. It is one of the main
ingredients of the study.
Rice. Refers to Oryza sativa, a swamp
grass which is widely cultivated as a source of
food. It is the main beneficiary of the study.
Insecticides. It is a pesticide that are
Definition of Terms
Pesticides. Refers to a chemical substance used
to kill organisms that are not wanted, such as
harmful insects or small animals.
Cyanogenic Glycosides. It is natural
plant toxins that are present in several
plants, most of which are consumed by humans.
Quasi Experimental Design. It is a
design that looks a bit like an experimental
design but lacks of key ingredient– random
assignments.
Research Design
Thisresearch study used both qualitative
and quantitative research design. The
experimental method being used in the
study was quasi experimental with pre-
and post-test design. The variables in
the study were utilized to determine the
effectivity of the cassava leaves extract
and chili pepper extract as insecticide
against the rice field pests. This study
also used complete randomized design.
Sampling and Participants of
the study
The participants of the study were different
insects regardless of their size and age.
Because, the study used complete randomize
experimental design to test the efficacy of
the treatments insects like grasshopper, rice
bugs, stem borer and others were the
subjects. For each concentration of the
treatments, there are 15 insects for each
three trials with a total of 135 insects used
on the study. They were placed on a small
terrarium for testing of the treatments.
Data Presentation
Results
CONCENTRATION A
Average Mean Time:
Trial 1= 19.67 Trial 2= 19.93 Trial 3= 17.067
19.67 + 19.93 + 17. 067 = 56.67 ⁄ 3 = 18.688
CONCENTRATION B
Average Mean Time:
Trial 1= 17.33 Trial 2= 16.2 Trial 3= 17.67
17.33 + 16.2 + 17. 67 = 51.2 ⁄ 3 = 17.067
CONCENTRATION C
Average Mean Time:
Trial 1= 18.53 Trial 2= 20.2 Trial 3= 19
18.53 + 20.2 + 19 = 57.73 ⁄ 3 = 19.24
Conclusion
As a conclusion based on the observations of
the researchers, the treatments with different
concentration of Cassava leaves extracts and
Chili Pepper extracts and chili extracts are
effective and potential as insecticide in the
rice field. It is because the Cassava leaves
contains Cyanogenic Glycoside that is
biologically poisonous to insects (Wobeto et
al., 2007) and the Chili Pepper that contains
compounds called Capsailinoids or Capsaicin
that said to be use in repelling pests and
insects (Aguhob et al., 2015).
Recommendations
We recommend maximizing the effectiveness of
the product by adding unique and better
ingredients to the product.
It is recommended to thoroughly extract the
ingredients and carefully follow the procedures for
better extraction.
The product must be tested in various
insects to know if it is capable and effective in
eliminating all insects in different rice fields or rice.
We also recommend that the extract
ingredients must be store over in one or two nights
for better result of the extract ingredients.
