Wikipedia says .....SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) generally refers
to industrial control systems (ICS): computer systems that monitor and control
industrial, infrastructure, or facility-based processes.
What does SCADA do?

• Generally SCADA is used for co-ordination of field

devices not to fully control them
• SCADA is used to interface to various control
devices such as PLC’s and other control systems
• Real time control is normally dealt with by the local
device
• The SCADA system is generally a centralised control
facility
So why have SCADA?

• Reduces operational costs

• Provides immediate knowledge of system
performance
• Improves system efficiency and performance
• Reduces costly repairs by spotting issues before they
become a failure
• Reduces number of man-hours (labor costs) required
for troubleshooting or service
• Frees up personnel for other important tasks
• Facilitates compliance with regulatory agencies
through automated report generating
• And more . . .
What did aggreko do before?

All this only MONITORED (no control available) 30 generators

What do aggreko do now?

Aggreko’s standard SCADA platform

190 MW (270 generators, 47 transformers,

and 8 switchgears) controlled from one
control room
It must be more expensive right?
