Understanding Normal Distribution Basics

Module 2 focuses on the normal distribution, covering its characteristics, the conversion between normal and standard normal variables, and the computation of probabilities using the standard normal table. It includes a true or false quiz regarding properties of the normal curve and tasks involving the analysis of student score distributions. Key properties of the normal probability distribution are outlined, emphasizing its bell shape, symmetry, and the relationship between mean, median, and mode.

Module 2: Normal

distribution
Understanding the
Normal Curve Distribution
At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. illustrate normal random variable and its

characteristics;
2. identify regions under normal curve
corresponding to different standard normal
values;
3. convert a normal random variable to a
standard normal variable and vice-versa; and
4. compute probabilities and percentiles using
the standard normal table.
Below is a 5-item true or false test. Determine whether
the statement is true or false. Write T if the statement
is true and F if false on the blank provided before the
number.
________1. The area under a normal curve is 100.
________2. The area under the curve corresponds to all
probabilities of X.
________3. The mean of a standard normal curve is 0.
________4. The normal curve is bell-shaped and is
symmetrical about its center.
________5. The curve is determined by the standard
deviation of the distribution
Given the following score distributions of the students in a
mathematics quiz, sketch the graph of the frequency polygon of
each distribution. Then, answer the questions that follow.
[Link] is the shape of the graph?

2. Compute the three measures of averages of the distribution:

mean, median, and mode. What do you notice?

3. Where did you find these measures of the graph? At the

center? To the left side of the graph? Or to the right side of the
graph?

4. Based on the activity, what generalizations can you make?

Properties of the Normal Probability Distribution
The normal probability distribution has the following properties:
[Link] distribution curve is bell-shaped.
[Link] curve is symmetrical about its center. The mean, the median,
and the mode are equal and coincide at the center.
[Link] width of the curve is determined by the standard deviation of the
distribution.
[Link] tails of the curve flatten out indefinitely along the horizontal axis,
always approaching the axis but never touching it. That is, the curve
is asymptotic to the base line.
[Link] area under the curve is 1. Exactly half of the values are to the
left of the center and exactly half the values are to the right.
