HCl Bond Force Constant Calculation

The document calculates the force constant of the H-Cl bond in the HCl molecule using its vibrational absorption line wavelength of 3.465×10-6 m. It determines the reduced mass and frequency of the molecule, ultimately arriving at a force constant value of 481.44127 Nm-1. The calculations involve applying relevant formulas and constants for mass, wavelength, and frequency.

(INFRARED PROBLEM NO – 2)

The HCl molecule gives the vibrational absorption line of
wavelength 3.465×10-6 m Calculate the force constant of the
H-Cl bond.
Given that 1H=1.0087u, 35Cl=35.453u and u=1.67×10-27 kg
FORMULA
 µ = m(1H) ×m(35Cl)  ‫=ץ‬c/λ= 1(k/µ)1/2

m(1H) +m(35Cl)
µ=reduced mass C=velocity of light (3 × 108 m/s)
‫ = ץ‬frequency λ= wavelength(3.465×10-6 m)
k= force constant
SOLUTION
(1)Let’s determine the reduced mass, of the molecule
µ = m(1H) ×m(35Cl)
m(1H) +m(35Cl)

µ= 1.0087u × 35.453u / 1.0087u + 35.453u

µ= 35.761441 u2/ 36.4617 u
µ= 0.9807946 u 1u= 1/6.023×1023=0.166×10-26kg
µ=0.9807946×0.166×10-26kg
µ=0.1628119×10-26kg
µ=1.628119×10-27kg
(2) Let’s determine the frequency first from the below equation
‫=ץ‬c/λ = 1/2π(K/µ)1/2

(a) ‫=ץ‬c/λ
8
10 × 3 =‫( ץ‬m/s) / 3.465×10-6 (m)
14
10×0.865800=‫ ץ‬s-1
13
10×8.65800=‫ ץ‬s-1
(b)Now, Determine the force constant with the help of frequency
and reduced mass
1/2=‫ץ‬π(K/µ)1/2

8.65800×1013 s-1 = 1/2π(k/1.628119×10-27kg)1/2

(1/2π) = (1/2×3.14) = (1/6.28) =0.15923

Square on both sides to remove the square root on right side

(8.65800×1013 s-1)2 = (1/2π)2[(k/1.628119×10-27kg)1/2]2

(8.65800×1013 s-1)2 = (0.15923)2[(k/1.628119×10-27kg)1/2]2

74.96096×1026 s-2 = (0.02535) ×(k/1.628119×10-27kg)

74.96096×1026 s-2/ (0.02535) = (k/1.628119×10-27kg)

2957.03984×1026 s-2 = (k/1.628119×10-27kg)

k=2957.03984×1026 s-2×1.628119×10-27kg

k=4814.4127×10 kg s-2

k=481.44127 kg s-2

This can be written as

k=481.44127 Nm-1
THEREFORE, FORCE CONSTANT(k) = 481.44127Nm-1
END…
