Froth Flotation Process Overview

The froth flotation process is a selective separation technique used to separate valuable materials from unwanted materials using air bubbles in a flotation tank. It operates on the principle of differing wetting abilities of materials, with key steps including grinding, slurry preparation, and aeration. This process is widely applied in industries such as mining, paper recycling, wastewater treatment, and food processing.

Course Title: Unit Operations (501)
Froth Flotation Process:

“Froth flotation is a selective separation process to

separate valuable materials (recyclables, minerals, and
other fine-size waste) from unwanted materials (gangue)
using air bubbles in a general floatation tank.”
Principle of Flotation Process:

The basic principle applied in the process of froth flotation is

the difference in the wetting ability of the ore and remaining
impurities. The particles are categorized into two types on the
basis of their wetting ability:

1. Hydrophobic
2. Hydrophilic
Steps of the Froth Flotation Process:

The steps of the froth flotation process are:

1. Grinding of ore
2. Slurry preparation
3. Addition of chemicals
4. Agitation
5. Aeration
6. Foam formation and separation of froth
7. Drying of metal
List of Chemicals Used:
In order to maintain the uniform quality of froth and optimize the adhesive quality of
the minerals, different chemicals are required to be mixed in the slurry. Some of such
important chemicals are listed below:

1. Collectors
2. Frothers
3. Activators
4. Inhibitors
5. pH Modifiers
Types of Flotation Process:
There are many types of flotation processes, including:

1. Froth flotation
2. Column flotation
3. Dissolved air flotation
4. Electro flotation.
FROTH FLOTATION PROCESS:
COLUMN FLOTATION PROCESS:
Applications of Flotation Process:
The froth flotation process is used in many industries, including:

Mining: The process is used to separate valuable minerals from other materials in
crushed ores. It's considered one of the most important technologies for recovering
sulfide ores and other minerals like lead and copper.

Paper recycling: Froth flotation is used in the paper recycling industry.

Wastewater treatment: Froth flotation is used in wastewater treatment.

Food processing: Froth flotation is used in food processing.

Ion separation: Froth flotation is used in ion separation.

Oil sand processing: Froth flotation is used in oil sand processing.
