TLE 8 - EIM
Review:

What is used to
measure the voltage,
resistance and
current of a circuit?
2
Review:

It is used to measure
the length of an
object in centimeter
or inches
2
Objective:

Compute for
required data; and
Convert data to its
equivalent unit of
measurement. 2
Unlocking of Words:

Conversion – refers to the process of

changing something from one form, use,
or purpose to another.
Measurement - involves quantifying or
determining the size, amount, extent, or
capacity of something using standard
units or reference points. 2
We will begin our science experiment by
taking a measurement of the temperature.

2
We need to do a conversion from meters to
centimeters for this math problem.

2
Motivation:

What’s the longest object you can think of?

How many rulers long do you think it is?

2
Motivation:

2
Abstraction:

System of Measurement
A system of measurement is a set of
units which can be used to specify
anything that can be measured.
Abstraction:

[Link] system provides the creative way on how people can

measure by themselves. For example, people measure shorter
distance on the ground with their feet. They measure long
distances by their palms which is equal to a yard.

 Inch

 Yard

 Mile
Abstraction:

2. Metric system is a decimalized system of measurement. It exists

in several variations with different choices of base units. Metric units
are widely used around the world for personal, commercial and
scientific purposes

 Millimeter

 Centimeter

 Decimeter

 Meter
Abstraction:

Common English units and each

equivalent

 1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (in)

 1 yard (yd) = 3 feet

 1 yard = 36 inches
Abstraction:

Common Metric units and each equivalent

 10 millimeter (mm) = 1 centimeter (cm)

 10 centimeter = 1 decimeter (dm)

 10 decimeter = 1 meter (m)

 100 centimeter = 1 meter

Abstraction:

Some of the English to metric equivalent

 1 inch = 2.54 centimeter

 1 foot = 30.48 centimeter

 1 yard = 91.44 centimeter

Abstraction:

Converting the unit of measurement from Metric to

Metric Measurements

Examples: 1.) 10 feet = _________ inches

Steps in solving the above problem

Step 1: Remember that 1 foot is equal to 12 inches, thus:

10 ft x 12 in
1 ft
Abstraction:

Step 2: Multiply 10 feet to 12 inches, thus:

10 ft x 12 in
1 ft
Step 3: Cancel the common units of measurement, then
perform the indicated operation, thus:
10 ft x 12 in = 120 in
1 ft

Therefore 10 feet = 120 inches

Abstraction:
2. 6 feet = yard
Steps in solving the above problem:

Step 1: Remember that 1 yd is equal to 3 feet, thus:

6 ft x 1 yd
3 ft
Abstraction:

Step 2: Multiply the numerator (6 ft) to (1 yd), and divide by the

denominator (3 ft) thus:
6 ft x 1 yd
3 ft
Step 3: Cancel the common units of measurement, then perform the
indicated operation, thus:
6 ft x 1 yd = 2 yd
3 ft
Therefore 6 feet = 2 yards
Abstraction:

Converting the unit of

measurement from Metric to
Metric Measurements
Abstraction:
Examples:
1. 100 millimeter = centimeter

Steps in solving the above problem:

Step 1: Remember that 10 millimeter is equal to 1 centimeter, thus:

100 mm x 1 cm
10 mm
Abstraction:
Step 2: Multiply the numerator (100 mm) to (1 cm), and divide by the denominator
(10 mm) thus:
100 mm x 1 cm
10 mm

Step 3: Cancel the common units of measurement, then perform the indicated
operation, thus:

100 mm x 1 cm = 10 cm
10 mm

Therefore 100 millimeters = 10 centimeters

Abstraction:
2. 2 meters = millimeter

Steps in solving the above problem:

Step 1: Remember that 100 centimeter is equal to 1 meter, thus:
2 m x 100 cm
1m

Step 2: Multiply the numerator (2 m) to (100 cm), thus:

2 m x 100 cm
1m
Abstraction:
Step 3: Cancel the common units of measurement, then
perform the indicated operation, thus:
2 m x 100 cm = 200 cm
1m

Step 4: Remember that 10 millimeter is equal to 1 centimeter,

thus:

200 cm x 10 mm
1 cm
Abstraction:

Step 5: Multiply the numerator (200cm) to (10 mm),

thus:
200 cm x 10 mm
1 cm

Step 6: Cancel the common units of measurement, then perform the

indicated operation, thus:
200 cm x 10 mm = 2000 mm
1 cm

Therefore 2 meters = 2000 millimeters

Abstraction:

Converting the unit of

measurement from
English to metric and vice
versa
Abstraction:
Example:
1. 10 inches = centimeter

Steps in solving the above problem:

Step 1: Remember that 1 inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters, thus:
10 in x 2.54 cm
1 in

Step 2: Multiply the numerator (10 in) to (2.54 cm), thus:

10 in x 2.54 cm
1 in
Abstraction:
Step 3: Cancel the common units of measurement, then perform the
indicated operation, thus:

10 in x 2.54 cm = 25.4 cm
1 in

Therefore 10 inches = 25.4 centimeters

Abstraction:
2. 50 centimeters = feet
Steps in solving the above problem:

Step 1: Remember that 1 foot is equal to 30.48 centimeters, thus:

50 cm x 1 ft
30. 48 cm

Step 2: Multiply the numerator (50 cm) to (1 ft), and divide by the denominator
(30.48 cm) thus:
50 cm x 1 ft
30. 48 cm
Abstraction:
Step 3: Cancel the common units of measurement, then perform the indicated
operation, thus:

50 cm x 1 ft = 1640 ft
30. 48 cm

Therefore 50 centimeters = 1.640 feet

Abstraction:
Reading a Ruler

A ruler has two sides. One side contains a English System and the other side
is the Metric System.

The Inch Graduation

The inch is divided into 16 graduations/lines. The first graduation is 1/16, the
second graduation is 1/8 or 2/16, the third graduation is 3/16, the fourth
graduation is 1/4 or 4/16 and so on.
Abstraction:

Note: 1 inch is equal to 16 lines/graduations

Abstraction:

The Centimeter Graduation

A Centimeter is divided into 10 graduations/lines. The

first graduation is 1 millimeter (mm), the second
graduation is 2 millimeters, the third graduation is 3
millimeters and so on
Abstraction:

Note: 1 graduation is equal to 1 millimeter (mm)
