HUMAN FLOURISHING IN SCIENCE
AND TECHNOLOGY
CHAPTER 4.1
1
LEARNING
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this chapter , the students
should be able to:
1. Discuss what technology reveals;
2. Examine modern technology and its role
in human flourishing; and
3. Explain the role of art in technological
world.
2
HUMAN
FLOURISHING
• HUMAN FLOURISHING – is the process of
developing the capacities, strengths, and
virtues of the individual in different areas of
their life
• It refers to the realization of a person's full
potential and the achievement of a
meaningful, fulfilling life.
3
3
EUDAIMONIA
• It comes from the Greek word eu meaning “well”, and
daimon or daemon meaning “spirit”
• It is defined as a contented state of being happy, healthy,
and prosperous.
• In Philosophy, Eudaimonism refers for pursuing the right
actions that lead to one’s “well-being”.

EUDAMONIA

A r i s t o t l e
• The term Eudamonia is explained by Aristotle in his
Nicomachean Ethics.
• Socrates believed that virtue is a sort of knowledge
( the knowledge of good and evil)
• Plato observed that even bad people are capable of
feeling guilty when they do something wrong.
• Aristotle departed from the Socratic view that
happiness is based on leading a life of virtue. In
Aristotle’s point of view, the individual’s worldly
conditions are important in his or her pursuit of
eudaimonia.
• Aristotle believed that being part of a community is
needed for an individual to flourish as a human being.
5
HEDONISM
- Comes from the Greek word “hedone” which means
“pleasure”
- According to Hedonism, pleasure is the most
valuable pursuit of mankind and everything that one
does is to gain pleasure.
- It claims that only pleasure or pain motivates us.

TECHNOLOGY AS A WAY OF
REVEALING
CHAPTER 4.2

T E C H N O LO G Y A S WAY O F
REVEALING
MARTIN HEIDEGGER
• Technology can be defined as the
advancement of scientific knowledge to
solve simple to complex problems.
• Martin Heidegger - a German
philosopher, a man acclaimed for his works
on metaphysics and existentialism
- He is best known for his essay “The
Question Concerning Technology “(1954).
9
Heidegger's Perspective:
Technology as a Way of Revealing
Heidegger does not see technology merely as a
collection of tools or machines that humans control
and use to fulfill needs or desires. Instead, he
suggests that technology is a way of revealing truth
and the world around us — a form of uncovering or
bringing forth knowledge.
10
11
Heidegger's Perspective:
Technology as a Way of Revealing
1. Technology as a Mode of Unconcealment
(Aletheia)
2. Enframing (Gestell): The Danger of Modern
Technology
3. Technology and Human Flourishing
12
ART AS A WAY OUT OF
ENFRAMING
• HEIDEGGER proposes art as a way out of
enframing.
• With art, we are better able to see the poetic in
nature in reality.
• It leads us away from calculative thinking and
towards meditative thinking.
13
13
14
Heidegger SEES REALITY AS A RESULT OF
CAUSES OR MEANS. HE PLACES
ARISTOTLE’S FOUR CAUSES IN PARALLEL
TO HIS OWN PERSPECTIVE
• Causa materialis (material cause) – or the material out of which
the object is made.
• Causa formalis ( formal cause) – due to the arrangement, shape,
or the appearance
• Causa finalis (final cause) – purpose or function of the object.
• Causa efficiens (efficient cause) – what causes change in an
object.
