Problem Statement

Development of a Water Quality Monitoring and Forecasting System Using

Machine Learning
Algorithms: A Comparative Study of LSTM and Random Forest

Problem Description:
The project aims to develop a robust predictive model for monitoring and
forecasting water quality using machine learning algorithms. Specifically, the
study will focus on comparing the performance of Long Short-Term Memory
(LSTM) and Random Forest algorithms in predicting water quality parameters
based on historical data.
Abstract
• Water quality monitoring and forecasting play pivotal roles in environmental
sustainability and public health. Traditional methods rely on periodic sampling and
laboratory analysis, which may not provide real-time insights into water quality
fluctuations. In contrast, machine learning (ML) offers promising avenues to
enhance water quality management by enabling continuous data-driven analysis
and prediction.
• This project focuses on developing a robust Water Quality Monitoring and
Forecasting System (WQMFS) using ML algorithms, specifically Long Short-Term
Memory (LSTM) and Random Forest. LSTM is well-suited for time-series data
analysis, making it ideal for forecasting water quality parameters over time.
Random Forest, an ensemble learning method, excels in handling diverse and
multidimensional datasets, making it suitable for classification and regression tasks
related to water quality prediction.
