Goal-Setting
By: Rolando DeLuna
What is a Goal?
A Goal is an objective and subjective and is a target that someone is trying to reach or achieve. You can set goals
for anything, and goals are mainly set for something that you want to better yourself at. Here are some of my goals
that I have set for this semester to give you better understanding of what a goal can be:
1. Be a better Student this semester.
2. Study 2 hours a day.
3. Go to the gym 3 times a week.
4. Be more Proactive.
Now let me furthermore explain the different kinds of goals, the benefits of goals, how one can create a goal, and
the common problems one experiences when setting goals. Anyone can use Goal Setting.
The Different types of Goals!
Here are the different kinds of Goals:
1. Outcome goals: Typically focus on a competitive result of an event, such as winning a
race, earning a medal or scoring more points etc.
2. Performance goals: Focus on achieving standards or performance objectives
independently of other competitors, usually on the basis of comparisons with one’s own
previous performances.
3. Process Goals: Focus on the actions an individuals must engage in during
performance to execute or perform well.
These different kinds of Goals can help an athlete better themselves on and off the field.
How to create a
Goal for
yourself!
S: Specific: Make your goals clear and fixated. This
can make it much easier for you to get to your goal
faster.
M: Measurable: Create a system to measure your
progress. It can be graph containing numbers and
dates.
A: Adaptable and Attainable: Setting goals that are
realistic and can be accomplished within a certain time
frame.
R: Realistic: Be honest with yourself and be sure that
you can achieve it.
T: Time Based: Set a time frame for your goal. It can be
days, months or even years.
When Creating Goals, you must go by this Framework
for it to work. As an Athlete/ Soccer player I used this
Framework to help me set goals for myself all the time
and it has helped wonders.
Designing a Goal Setting System!
Stage 1(Preparation and Planning): Assess your
abilities and needs then set goals in those areas
of needs.
Stage 2 (Education and Acquisition): Once the
preparation and planning stage is complete you
would schedule a team meeting to discuss
different goals that you all can improve on then
focus on one goal at a time.
Stage 3 (Implementation and goal follow-up and
evaluation): Once the athlete knows how to set
goals, the next step is to list the goals that are
appropriate. Then Pursue that goal.
This System can apply to everyone that want to
set goals.

help Athletes.
Common Problems in Goal Setting
Goal setting is not a difficult technique to understand. The common
problems that Athletes and students make when setting goals is that
athletes tend to set way too many goals way too soon, Failing to
adjust the goals when they are not met and failure to set
performance and process goals.
As an Athlete we tend to set all these unrealistic goals for our selves
thinking we are going to complete them but in reality, it is pretty hard
to complete it because we get caught up with other goals and life in
general. When setting goals, they cannot be vague they have to
make sense for example:
“Practice dribbling and have better control of the ball” and not
“Improving overall control of ball”. Keep it short and simple don’t
overcomplicate it.
When setting goals don’t set too many goals at once set 1 or 2 for
yourself so that it could be easier to achieve by setting more
overtime they get invariably abandoned. Make the goals short term
like 2 weeks rather than 6 months or more. One last common
problem is that Athletes tend to not track their goals by tracking your
goals it can give you an idea on where you are to completing the
goal.
Experience with Goal Setting as an Athlete and a student
As a Soccer player and a Student, it can be very hard to meet certain
expectations. When I was introduced to Goal Setting by my coach, I applied
it to everything that I did for school, soccer, work etc. It has helped me juggle
better for soccer, strike the ball better, it even helped me study better for
school. I believe that everyone should use the Goal setting Technique
S.M.A.R.T. as an older brother I even tell my brothers to set goals for
themselves even though they are younger than me. Goal Setting can help
you in the long run if you start early.
