Introduction

This presentation provides an overview of cancer,

including its definition, types, causes, and
treatments.
01
Cancer Overview
Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled cell
growth. It occurs when the body cells begin to divide
uncontrollably and invade other tissues. This can lead to the
formation of tumors, which can be benign or malignant. The
malignancy can spread to other parts of the body through the
bloodstream and lymphatic system.

Definition of Cancer
There are various types of cancer, classified based on the
tissues or organs where they originate. Common types include:
- Carcinomas: Cancers that begin in the skin or tissues lining
the organs.
- Sarcomas: Cancers that originate in bone, cartilage, fat,
muscle, or other connective tissues.
- Leukemias: Cancers of the blood cells, typically starting in the
bone marrow.
- Lymphomas: Cancers that start in the immune system tissues.

Types of Cancer
Causes and Risk Factors

Cancer has various causes and risk factors that

contribute to its development. Genetic predisposition
plays a significant role, as certain mutations
inherited from parents can increase cancer risk.
Environmental factors, such as exposure to
carcinogens (e.g., tobacco smoke, radiation, and
chemicals), also contribute. Lifestyle choices,
including diet, physical activity, and alcohol
consumption, are critical. Infectious agents like
viruses (e.g., HPV, hepatitis B and C) can lead to
cancer as well. Understanding these factors can help
in prevention and early detection efforts.
02
Cancer Treatment
Surgery

Surgery is often the first line of treatment for cancer,

aiming to remove the tumor and surrounding tissue
to achieve clear margins. It is most effective for
localized cancers and can potentially cure the
disease. Surgical procedures vary in complexity and
may include minimally invasive techniques or major
operations. Recovery times and the potential need
for follow-up treatments depend on the extent of the
surgery and the type of cancer.
Chemotherapy involves the use of powerful drugs to kill cancer
cells or stop their growth. This treatment can be administered
before surgery to shrink tumors (neoadjuvant therapy), after
surgery to eliminate remaining cancer cells (adjuvant therapy),
or as the primary treatment for advanced cancers. While
effective, chemotherapy can cause significant side effects due
to its impact on healthy cells, highlighting the need for careful
management during treatment.

Chemotherapy
Radiation therapy uses high-energy particles or waves, such as
X-rays, to damage or kill cancer cells. It can be applied
externally or internally, depending on the cancer type and
location. This treatment is often combined with surgery or
chemotherapy to maximize effectiveness. Side effects may
include fatigue, skin irritation, and localized pain, but it is a
crucial tool in both curative and palliative cancer care.

Radiation Therapy
Understanding cancer's causes, types, and treatment
modalities is crucial for effective management and prevention.
Early detection, lifestyle modifications, and advances in
treatment options provide hope for improved outcomes in
cancer patients. Continuous research and education are
essential in the fight against cancer.
